Saugus High hockey senior captain Mike Scuzzarella is out for the remainder of the season after breaking his wrist in Wednesday night’s game against the Lynn Jets. The injury spells the end of Scuzzarella’s high school hockey career. He does, however, play lacrosse in the spring.Scuzzarella was one of the two pitchers for the Saugus American team that made the finals of the U.S. segment of the 2003 Little League World Series.Saugus coach Chris Connors said Scuzzarella, who was taken to Beverly Hospital where he later had surgery, injured his wrist on a hit into the boards with about six minutes remaining in the game.”He went awkwardly into the boards,” Connors said, adding it was the most gruesome injury he has seen in his years in hockey.”Scuzzarella wasn’t the only Saugus player injured in the game. Defenseman Derek Stretton suffered a gash to his arm that also required a trip to the hospital for six stitches. Connors said Stretton was bleeding profusely on the bench after getting cut by a skate apparently just before scoring the Sachems’ second goal of the night, which tied the game 2-2. The Jets went up again, 3-2, before Saugus’ Paul Andrews tied the game 5:51 into the final period.”He (Stretton) is very lucky he had no nerve damage or tendon damage,” Connors said, adding that Stretton is day-to-day with his injury, but he will be back.Connors said he held a team meeting Thursday and Scuzzarella, sporting a cast on his wrist and having just had surgery, was at the meeting to talk to his teammates.”He’s probably one of the best all-around student-athletes I’ve ever coached,” Connors said. “On and off the ice, he conducts himself like a gentleman. He’s a role model. He’s a tough kid. He’ll bounce back.”Scuzzarella also plays lacrosse in the spring. Connors said it will be a wait and see situation as far as how the injury will impact that season. The Sachems have already qualified for the state tournament. They have four games remaining and at this point, the goal is to get the best seed possible, Connors said.
