Marblehead crash ties up traffic

MARBLEHEAD – A Vermont man totaled his Jaguar and tied up traffic for two hours after crashing the car into a fence and utility pole on Lafayette Street shortly after 12:30 p.m. Monday, police said.Jay A. Lawrence, 56, of Gaysville, Vt., was not seriously injured and was not cited by police.The impact of the crash shattered the pole at its base, creating a safety hazard to passing motorists at the corner of Lafayette Street and Cama Road, according to police.Police said Lawrence’s injuries could have been much worse.Lawrence “was saved from any injury due to wearing his seat belt,” Lt. Dave Millet said.Lawrence said he somehow became distracted and lost control of the vehicle before the crash, according to police.- Dan O’Brien
