SALEM – A Lynn man reportedly shot himself in the foot around 8 p.m. Thursday inside a second floor apartment on Boston Street, where the bullet then passed through the ceiling and landed in the first floor apartment, narrowly missing a tenant.Kevin Silva, 17, of Peabody allegedly drove Alfred Cochrane Jr., 22, of Lynn, to Salem Hospital for medical treatment right after the incident.Cochrane suffered a broken foot from the accidental bullet wound and was sent to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for an operation.According to a police report, a caller located on the first floor of an apartment at 11 Boston St. told police that he heard a loud bang and then a bullet came through the ceiling of the apartment.The caller told police that the bullet landed on his bed, which was about three feet from where he had been sitting at the time.Detectives located a trail of blood leading from the street all the way into the second floor apartment.After a search of the area, Police Capt. Paul Tucker found a bullet hole in the second floor bedroom.While there was no gunshot victim at the residence when police arrived, a patrolman at Salem Hospital witnessed a young man hobble inside the emergency room.According to police, both Cochrane and Silva are associated with the Latin Kings gang.Police said they are still investigating the shooting, but said they plan to summons Cochrane on charges of illegal possession of a firearm, discharging a firearm in a dwelling and malicious damage.The second floor apartment is rented out to Jose Morales, 23, who was a suspect in a November 2005 drive-by shooting in Salem.Morales had been arrested on Nov. 17, 2005, a few hours after the shooting occurred on Bridge Street, but charges in the shooting were later dropped when the victim refused to cooperate with prosecutors.
