GLOUCESTER – Gloucester and St. Mary’s have been two of the most consistent hockey programs on the North Shore in recent seasons and the two have staged four memorable contests over the past three seasons. But for the Spartans, the outcomes of those games weren’t good as Gloucester came into Wednesday’s game having won three in a row over St. Mary’s. This game, however, would be a different story.Dominating the game for nearly all 45 minutes, the Spartans rolled to a 6-1 win at Talbot Rink in front of 900 boisterous fans and clinched a state tournament berth in the process.”St. Mary’s-Gloucester, no matter where it is, is always a battle,” St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee said. “Qualifying for the tournament against these guys is special because they’ve been a thorn for us in the past.”Despite the shots on goal being dead even at 22-22 in the game, the Spartans (9-5-2) had the better chances and finished them when they had shots. The exact opposite was true for the Fishermen (10-3-2), who missed three open nets in the game.Gloucester came out flying, testing Spartan goaltender Frank McCormick early with several quality chances, but was unable to find the mark. The Spartans took Gloucester’s opening punch and then began delivering several of their own against Bradley Robertson. The pressure finally paid off at 9:30 of the first when Corey Bartlett’s wrist shot from the left wing deflected off a defenseman and past Robertson for a 1-0 lead. The lead doubled inside the final minute of the period with St. Mary’s on the power play. Hard work from Zak Borowski behind the Gloucester net got the puck to John Baldwin in the left circle for a pinpoint shot under the crossbar and a 2-0 lead.”We didn’t bring our ‘A’ game early, but we were able to fight through it,” Lee said. The second period saw the Fishermen take four penalties and lose Robertson early on when he re-injured his left shoulder, which had been hurt against Newburyport on Saturday, but no damage was done for over half the second. The Spartans then caught a break to go up 3-0 as Corey Lee partially fanned on a shot, but it slipped between the pads of backup goalie Dom Novello, causing a hush to fall over the normally-loud rink.Desperately needing something good to happen, the Fishermen got it with 42.1 seconds left in the second when Josh Salah tapped home an Andrew Fulford pass at the left post to cut the margin to 3-1 heading to the third.Any thought that Gloucester could spin a little home-ice magic got erased early in the third when Brett Cahill was called for holding and Ryan Fitzsimons scored on a screen shot on the ensuing power play at 3:00 to make it 4-1.The floodgates opened from there as Tommy Adams beat Novello 5-hole at 7:36, off a Bartlett assist, to make it 5-1. Baldwin closed out the scoring at 12:49 with his 19th goal of the season on a breakaway.”We have a lot of young kids who were a little in awe of the atmosphere for a while, but in that third period, we settled down and played St. Mary’s hockey,” Lee said.
