PEABODY – Letters offering the final refund amount resulting from the infamous Peabody High School Band Disney field trip of 2005 were sent out Wednesday to all 35 students who participated. The letters were sent via U.S. first class and U.S. certified mail. The refunds stem from the incident involving then-band director Stephen Baberadt Jr., who allegedly overcharged students for the trip and used fundraiser money to bring his family members along for free. Furious parents claimed that Baberadt owed students $530 each, after charging $800 for a trip that should have cost them only $270.The School Committee and the Peabody Police Department have both worked diligently over the years to reclaim the money that rightfully belongs to those students. In July, the police department reached a settlement of $10,600. However, while conducting recent interviews with those involved in the incident, a subcommittee organized by Mayor Michael Bonfanti to deal specifically with this complicated matter discovered that an additional $6,228 was left over in the Peabody Instrumental Music Association’s account – money that was intended for the students. It was the recommendation of the School Committee that the leftover fundraising money be combined with the original settlement amount, totaling $18,522 to then be dispersed to the eligible 35 recipients. Each student is now eligible for a refund in the amount of $529.20, if they wish to accept.Money from those families wishing not to claim the reimbursement will be automatically deposited into the PVMHS Band Student Activities Account to be used for current band members. All letters must be returned to the Superintendent’s Office, Peabody Public Schools, 21 Johnson St., Peabody, MA 01960, by the deadline of March 10, 2008.
