BOSTON – Nathan Gerbe’s goal at 7:15 of the first overtime gave Boston College a 4-3 win over Boston University on Monday at TD BankNorth Garden in the second semifinal of the 56th Annual Beanpot Tournament. The Eagles, who lost last year’s final in overtime to the Terriers, will play Harvard next Monday (8) in the 56th tournament final. The dramatic end came when Brian Gibbons slid a pass across the front of the net to Gerbe, who deposited the puck into a wide-open net for the winner. For North Shore hockey fans, Monday night’s second game at the Beanpot was a chance to watch six of the area’s top players skate on Garden ice.And for three periods and overtime, those six locals were a part of another classic between Boston College and Boston University. The Eagles, featuring Saugus’ Kyle Kucharski and Benn Ferriero (Governor Dummer), and Terriers, with Danvers’ Brian McGuirk, Saugus’ Jason Lawrence, Lynnfield’s Chris Higgins and St. John’s grad John McCarthy, were tied at 3-3 at the end of regulation. The Terriers, who were trying to reach their 44th final in the tourney’s history, drew first blood early.McGuirk took a Kevin Shattenkirk pass and put a shot on Eagle netminder John Muse. The long rebound bounced out to McCarthy, who shoveled the puck around Muse while falling to the ice for a 1-0 BU lead. The Eagles tied the game a little over five minutes later on the power play as Anthony Aiello’s shot from the blue line found its way through a maze of legs in front of BU’s Brett Bennett.Ten seconds later, Ferriero, who came in needing two points to reach the 100-point mark in his career, took a Ben Smith pass and put a shot past Bennett to give BC a 2-1 lead after one period. The second period saw tempers flare on both sides and the Terriers respond with a pair of goals to retake the lead. Nick Bonino tied the game at 2-2 on the power play at 3:30 before Peter MacArthur gave BU the lead at 8:44, again on the power play. The Eagles responded less than a minute into the third when diminutive Gerbe, who goes all of 5-5 and 165 pounds, picked up his 20th goal of the season on a scramble in front of the BU net.Kucharski and company then looked to have taken the lead at 5:19 on the power play when Brooks Orpik slammed home a loose puck in the crease. But after further review by the replay officials, the goal was called back, keeping the game tied at 3-3.Ferriero nearly put an end to the drama late in regulation when he walked through the defense, but ran into the right pad of Bennett with 4:30 left in regulation. In the opening game, Harvard rattled off three goals in the opening period to upend No. 14 Northeastern, 3-1, in front of a sparse crowd.Paul Dufault scored at 2:06 of the first to give the Crimson a 1-0 lead before Mike Taylor and Doug Rogers scored 33 seconds apart later in the period to make it 3-0.The Huskies (12-9-2) got back one of those goals late in the second but the Crimson held the fort the rest of the way to reach next Monday’s final.
