If there is such a thing as a must-win game, then that would be what the St. Mary’s hockey team faced in Braintree against Archbishop Williams on Wednesday.The Spartans hadn’t won since the week after Christmas, a span of five games. But leave it to the trio of Zak Borowski, John Perkins and James Perkins to get St. Mary’s off the snide.The line combined for four goals and 10 points as the Spartans rolled to a 6-2 win over the Bishops.”It was a great way to bounce back after going that long without a win,” St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee said. “It was a solid effort from all three lines and in goal.”Things didn’t start well for the Spartans (6-5-2, 4-3-1 Catholic Central League/Large) as they trailed 1-0 after one period. Borowski quickly righted things with a goal 91 seconds into the second, assisted by Perkins.Baldwin gave St. Mary’s the lead for good at 8:47, assisted by Borowski and Perkins. Tommy Adams upped the gap to 3-1 two minutes later before Borowski closed out the period with his second at 14:12.Williams cut the gap to 4-2 in the opening minute of the third before Adams and Baldwin each got their second goals of the game to close out the scoring.Nashoba 6, Tech 2At Nashoba, the Tigers came out flat and stayed that way until the final buzzer, Tech coach Tim Serino said.Justin Colontuoni scored Tech’s first goal in the second period with the assists going to Jesse Wilkins and Derek LeBlanc. LeBlanc scored in the third from Wilkins. The Tigers are 3-9.Xaverian 3, St. John’s 0At Canton, the Eagles outshot the hosts 34-32 but couldn’t get anything past Xaverian’s Kyle MacDonald. It was a 1-0 game with six minutes left when the Hawks scored a power-play goal (on the game’s only penalty) and then added an empty-netter in the final moments.Eric Clifford made 29 stops for the Prep, which hosts BC High on Saturday (2:30) in Wilmington.GIRLS HOCKEYEnglish 5, Medford 1At Connery Rink, the Bulldogs have struggled lately, but they put it all together against the Mustangs. McKenzie Clarke (goal, 2 assists) and Ashley Fiandaca scored in the first period, only to see Medford cut the deficit in half. English put the game out of reach on second-period goals by Adriana Russell (goal, assist) and Candace Kirk. Seventh-grader Katie Jeter scored the final goal in the third period.Coach Ric Aylwin said the coaching staff juggled the lines a bit and the move worked out well. Amanda Witunsky was in net most of the way with Aleasha Despres playing the final few minutes. English is 3-6.
