PEABODY – Much like his inaugural speech on Jan. 7, Mayor Michael Bonfanti’s State of the City address Wednesday focused on flood mitigation, reviving the downtown, increasing state aide, maintaining a strong reserve position, and “making an already good school system better.”Bonfanti’s State of the City Breakfast was held at Spinelli’s Function Facility on Route 1 south in Lynnfield.City Hall employees and Peabody Chamber of Commerce members listened as Bonfanti addressed the main issues facing Peabody in 2008 and his plans to solve them. He also gave his year-end review of 2007.Bonfanti said that, although disappointed in the amount of federal and state aid given to Peabody last year, he’s not deterred. He will continue to “pressure our federal and state legislative delegation to ensure that they help us find every dollar and apply for every grant that may benefit Peabody and its taxpayers.”In terms of education, Bonfanti is highly confident that the city will receive funding from the Massachusetts School Building Authority for renovation projects at both the Higgins Middle School and Welch Elementary School. Following that line, renovations at the High School are moving on schedule and expected to be completed by the end of this year. The theme of Bonfanti’s speech was working together, as he often urged his audience to take an active role in Peabody’s future.”A mayor doesn’t do these things alone,” he said, acknowledging his staff. “Let’s pledge to continue to work together and move the city forward. Let’s pledge our commitment to ensure the brightest future for the young and the old.”In honor of Bonfanti and the efforts of his staff, the Chamber of Commerce made a token donation of $100 to one of the city’s favorable charities, Haven From Hunger.”We wanted to show something in appreciation of his time,” said Executive Director Deanne Healey. “And knowing that we are a membership organization, we do like to try to support a nonprofit organization in town.”Wednesday’s event was sponsored by North Shore Bank and organized by the Peabody Chamber of Commerce.
