MARBLEHEAD – What has been for many an institution in Marblehead ends its long reign today as Maddie’s Sail Loft closes its doors with no immediate plans to reopen.Currently in its 61st year of business, the watering hole at 15 State St., once described by Sail magazine as among the world’s best sailor bars, officially shuts down at 11:45 p.m., according to bartender Nick Michaud.”It’s last call,” said Michaud. “We’re closing down for good unless somebody buys it.”Charles Perkins of the Boston Restaurant Group, a real estate brokerage for restaurants, has been recruited to handle the sale.”Maddie’s was famous, but there’s a different climate out there today,” said Perkins. “The emphasis is on food, not on drink. But Maddie’s had a very loyal following.”The building and the business are for sale, including 2,800 square feet spread over two floors, with the ability to seat 150 customers. It is described in real estate listings as an upscale bar and grill, serving American cuisine, its walls laden with sailing memorabilia. The establishment is licensed by the town to operate Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m.-to-midnight, and on Sunday from 11 a.m.-to-midnight. The property has three parking spaces.John Tangusso, one of the three owners and the managing partner, could not be reached for comment. Tangusso and the others purchased Maddie’s less than three years ago.The bar and restaurant has been embroiled in occasional conflicts with town licensing authorities, stemming from violations and disturbances in the congested neighborhood near the waterfront.”Marblehead, like other small towns, has been hurt by the no-smoking laws. People go outside after they’ve had a few drinks and they can get loud,” Perkins said.Zagat, the restaurant guide, found that Maddie’s was unspoiled by its world fame.”We’re hoping to find a young couple, maybe a chef, who wants to open it as a small, neighborhood establishment,” Perkins said. “John Tangusso and his wife tried very hard to make a go of it. But after the other investors left, he just couldn’t do it. He wants to concentrate on his law practice.”Maddie’s had annual sales in excess of $1 million and was a neighborhood favorite for many years, Perkins said.
