SWAMPSCOTT – Town officials say they are eyeing the Town Hall annex as one possible site for a new police station.Town Administrator Andrew Maylor said there has been a groundswell of support for selling the temple property being used as the annex and building a new police station at the Town Hall Annex on Humphrey Street.A report issued by the Temple Israel Study Committee concluded the best possible use for the former temple property is to use at least a portion of it for a new police station, but some town officials believe new construction on the old pumping station is a more realistic option that would better serve the needs of the police department and community.Maylor said a design has been developed for building a police station on the Town Hall Annex site. He said he expects it would cost approximately $7 million to build the station on that parcel.Maylor said building a police station on the old pump station site would cost approximately $900,000 more than retrofitting the temple property, but there are some advantages to building a new station.”You would have the warranties and benefits of new construction,” he said. “All the systems would be new and under warranty. Instead of retrofitting an existing property to try meet the needs of the police department, we would have a new facility that is a police station by design.”At a special Town Meeting in September 2005, Town Meeting members voted in favor of purchasing the 3.5-acre temple property by an overwhelming margin. Town Meeting authorized the town to spend up to $3.75 million to purchase the property and there was overwhelming support among town officials and Town Meeting members for retrofitting a portion of the site for use as a police station.Maylor said if the town decided to sell the temple property, at least a portion of the proceeds from the sale should be used to build a new police station because some of the money used to purchase the temple property were funds that had been appropriated for a new police station.”That (police station) was clearly the intent of Town Meeting when it voted to purchase this (temple) property,” he said.
