PEABODY – After it defeated Medford for the first time in 25 years on Monday, you couldn’t have blamed the Peabody hockey team for not having its best game on Wednesday at McVann-O’Keefe Rink against Swampscott. But the Tanners showed that even when they aren’t at 100 percent, they’re still pretty good.Peabody pelted Swampscott goalie Tyler Gallagher with 38 shots, 20 alone in the second period, and got a pair of goals and an assist from James Noftle en route to a 3-1 win over the Big Blue.”We played real good, solid defense,” Peabody coach Mark Leonard said. “We got the lead early and tried to shut them down.”After a sluggish start, the Tanner (3-1-0) offense got going, but penalties again became a problem. Peabody handed the Big Blue five power-play opportunities, but the defense was able to kill off each of them.”We just came out too slow and you can’t do that against Peabody. They have too many weapons,” Swampscott coach Gino Faia said. “The third period was more indicative of how we’ve been playing.”Things didn’t start fast for Peabody, but the Tanners quickly found their stride and began to tilt the action towards Gallagher’s net.Just past the five-minute mark, the pressure paid off as Matt Rodgers fed Elijah Cohen for a shot that was stopped. Noftle was there to poke home the rebound for a 1-0 lead. The Big Blue (0-2-1) finally got themselves going at the midpoint of the period and came within inches of tying the game, but Justin Massey was robbed by Jon Camara on a point-blank chance.Swampscott also got a 40-second 2-man advantage late in the period but failed to cash it in. The Tanners, meanwhile, went on the power play with 11 seconds left in the period when Alex DiDonato was called for high-sticking.”I think we got them on their heels a bit in the first period,” Leonard said.Peabody’s power play turned into a 2-man advantage 46 seconds into the period and the Tanners didn’t waste a lot of time in doubling the lead as Noftle took a Patrick Yeo pass and roofed a shot over Gallagher at 1:14.That goal began an onslaught of 13 consecutive shots against Gallagher in the first three minutes of the second, all of which saw Peabody on the power play. But the Big Blue and Gallagher were able to escape without further damage while a man short.”Tyler was great. He kept us in the game with a chance to come back,” Faia said. But Swampscott wouldn’t get out of harm’s way completely.Once again, the Tanners’ first line did the job as Cohen ripped a shot over Gallagher’s glove and off the inside of the right post to give Peabody a 3-0 lead exiting the second period. After managing just nine shots on goal over the first two periods, the Big Blue finally came around when the third started.Keith Morgan got Swampscott on the board at the 53-second mark when he was set up by A.J. Zarinsky and DiDonato to make it 3-1. But that was all the Tanners would allow as the defense allowed only three more shots in the game and 13 in total.
