For the second straight season, the St. Mary’s hockey team went into Veterans Memorial Rink in Arlington and beat perennial Super 8 contender Arlington Catholic on Wednesday night.The Spartans received goals from four different players and got a brilliant 39-save performance from sophomore Frank McCormick in net to grab a 4-1 win.”That is a very good team and to beat a quality team like AC is a huge confidence-builder for us,” St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee said. “The team had a solid, effective game from top to bottom.”It took 95 seconds for St. Mary’s (3-1, 2-1 Catholic Central League/Large) to get on the board thanks to sophomore Corey Bartlett. The Cougars tied the game late in the first on Sean Powers’ marker.From there on, the scoring belonged to St. Mary’s. Freshman James Perkins’ first varsity goal at the 43-second mark of the second period gave St. Mary’s the lead for good. Zak Borowski and Shaun Velez tacked on third-period goals.Lynn 6, Winthrop 3At Winthrop, the Jets (2-1, 1-0 Northeastern Conference South) broke a 3-3 tie with three goals in the final 5:52 of regulation.”That is a tough place to win at,” Jets coach Al Melanson said. “And any time you can come out of that barn with a win, it’s a good one.”The Jets trailed 1-0 early in the first before two goals from Dan Casale and a third from Dylan Bogart gave Lynn a 3-1 lead. Josh Salah had two goals and an assist for the Fishermen.Newburyport 1, Lynnfield 0At Newburyport, two of the heavy hitters in the Cape Ann League met for the first time since the Pioneers won in the Division 2 North quarterfinals last season. This time, it was the Clippers who prevailed on Derek Freeman’s goal at 1:27 of the second.Beverly 4, Danvers 4At Rockett Arena in Salem, the Panthers (2-0-1, 1-0-1 NEC North) had a 3-1 lead late in the second period but needed a Jack Leathersich goal with 1:15 left in the game to salvage a point.Danvers led 1-0 before a pair of Alex Baker goals along with one from Jack Liacos made it 3-1, Panthers. Steve Kontos scored for the Falcons with 29 seconds left in the second to cut the lead to one before Jake Korthas and Jay Sabino gave Danvers a short-lived lead.Fenwick 10, St. Clement’s 1At Watertown, the Crusaders’ (1-0) line of Pat Doliber, Dale Crispin and Mark Sparaco combined for five goals and nine assists.Speraco had four goals and an assist while Doliber had a goal and four assists and Crispin had four assists.Joe Cannatella had a goal and an assist, along with Ryan Adamson. James Gattuso, Jordan Mizioch and John Luti also had goals.
