PEABODY-The Peabody Fire Department welcomed three locals into their large family on Monday with a reception at City Hall.Steve Lynch, 28, Ron Ciampa, 27, and Scott Patturelli, 36, are the department?s newest members, and they couldn?t be happier.?I?m blessed to have this opportunity,” said Ciampa, who currently works as a plumber. “This is such a great opportunity. It hasn?t become a reality yet.”Ciampa said he?s dreamed of putting on the big, bulky suit and riding the red truck since he was a boy.?I love the trucks,” Ciampa said with a bit of a chuckle. “I want to learn everything there is to learn about them.”?I?m so excited,” said his mother Joan Ciampa, also of Peabody. “Ever since he was an Eagle Scout he?s wanted to do this.”Ciampa also credits the Scouts organization for his desire to help others and the community.?I just want to give back,” he said. And to Ciampa, that means an array of things such as holding the door open for someone, carrying groceries, and now, fighting fires. For Lynch, today was more than just a day to celebrate becoming a firefighter – it was also his birthday.?I?m happy, very honored, and very proud,” said Lynch. “It?s a nice feeling.”Lynch comes from a family with a long line of firefighters. His father, grandfather, and uncle all served with the Peabody Fire Department in years past.?It?s nice to have this tradition behind me,” Lynch said. “I hope I can make them proud.”By the large smile across his mother?s face, it?s safe to say he already has.?I?m excited for him,” said his mother Karen Lynch. However, as a mother, she also said that she can?t help but expect to be a little nervous when the bell rings.?I?m sure I?m more used to it than some,” said Karen, whose husband and father were both firefighters. “But I?ll have to go back to having a scanner in the house.”Patturelli, who currently works as a chemist, has also been interested in firefighting since he was a child, but tested out other fields first.?I went to school to be a dentist, but obviously that didn?t work out,” he laughs. “So I fell back on something I know (chemistry).” He said becoming a firefighter has always been what he?s really wanted to do, and is anxious to start working for the city. As a father of three young boys under six years old, he said he?d be happy and supportive if any one of them wanted to follow in his footsteps. All three men were chosen from the waiting list of over 400 other certified candidates, said Mayor Michael Bonfanti.?These are a bunch of a good guys,” he said. “The beauty of it is they are all local Peabody guys.”?New help is always a wonderful thing,” said Pasdon, noting how layoffs have become common elsewhere.Training begins in January at the Massachusetts Fire Academy in Stow and lasts 12 weeks. By that time, candidates will leave as a nationally certified firefighter.According to Pasdon, Oct. 2, 2008 marks the new recruits? first official day on the job.
