SWAMPSCOTT-A driver was cited after hitting a child in a crosswalk on Thursday afternoon.Dan Dumais, who is in the fourth grade at Clarke School, was on his way home from school with his brother when the incident occurred. Dumais was hit by a car at the corner of Essex and Burrill streets by a vehicle driven by Ynes Paulino, 46, 177 Williams Ave., Apt., 2, Lynn.Paulino was cited for failing to stop for a red light and failure to stop for a pedestrian in the sidewalk.Police received a call at 3:18 p.m. reporting a child struck by a car and, upon arrival, Officer Candace Doyle observed Dumais on the side of the road crying and he said his right leg hurt. When asked what happened, the victim told Doyle he was crossing the street with his brother and a car didn’t stop. The child told Doyle he was in the crosswalk.Paulino, who told police there was a glare from the sun, also said the light was green and she proceeded through the intersection when she noticed a truck stopped in the turning lane. According to the police report, she said she heard a noise, pulled over to the side of the road and noticed the victim’s brother in her rear view mirror.A witness, who was driving behind Paulino, said the light was red and the white crosswalk symbol was lit when Paulino went through the intersection.?She (the witness) saw the boys step out in front of the truck and as they appeared Paulino’s mirror hit the first kid and he spun around and fell to the ground,” the report reads.Another motorist, who was also stopped at the intersection, told police the light was turning red and she saw the kids on the side of the road and a truck driver stopped in the turning lane.?The driver of the truck waved the kids to cross,” according to the report. “As the kids passed by the truck, Paulino’s driver side mirror hit the first kid.”According to the police report, Paulino’s vehicle was missing the mirror on the driver side and a side mirror was found in the roadway.Dumais was transported to North Shore Children’s Hospital where he was treated and released.Attempts to reach Catherine Dumais, who is the mother of the victim, were unsuccessful on Monday.A friend of the family, who asked not to be identified, said the child suffered road burns.?I was told the police officer at the scene said he was very lucky,” she said. “The officer said if the boy had been an inch or two further out in the road he could have been killed.”
