LYNN – There were blankets, bottles and binkies on every table Friday as dozens of mothers gathered at the Franco-American Post to celebrate the birth of their babies during the past year.Santa arrived to greet the crowd, which proved a big hit with the older offspring, if not the bambinos. More importantly, Dr. Louis Laz was present, along with advanced practical nurse Amanda Davis, with whom the obstetrician runs the Lynn Women’s Health practice at 280 Union St.Between Laz and Davis, who is trained as a midwife, they delivered nearly 300 babies this year, mostly at Beverly Hospital. In keeping with what has become a tradition, Laz invites the mothers, fathers and their newborns to an annual Baby’s First Christmas Party. The doctor buys each baby a gift, such as a Beanie Baby stuffed toy.Raffles are held that provide food gift certificates redeemable at area supermarkets, and the families are treated to a buffet as festive holiday music plays in the background. Before going home, mothers and babies can pose for a photo with Santa. Many of the proud mothers are immigrants from Guatemala and the Dominican Republic.During the past year, Laz and Davis delivered 10 sets of twins. Laz opened the Lynn office in 1991 and, with Davis, has since brought nearly 4,000 babies into the world, of which 1,500 were born since 2003.At Friday’s party, Jilian Davis of Gloucester was among the new moms, cradling her daughter, Delilah, who was born in Wyoming with help from sister Amanda Davis, the midwife.Other proud parents included Lauren Mulcahy DelaCruz of Lynn and her husband, Miguel DelaCruz, who showed off their daughter, Rebekah, born Sept. 19.Saulo Noguera Vega and his wife, Mandi Noguera Vega, of Lynn, brought their baby boy, Joshua.”It’s a busy place,” said Dianne Hamilton, administrative assistant to Dr. Laz at Beverly Hospital.Sophea Isales, office manager at the Union Street practice, couldn’t agree more readily as she greeted the flow of mothers and babies at the door of the veterans’ hall. “We’ve had so many sets of twins this year,” she said. “Lots of new mothers. It’s wonderful.”
