LYNN – Last Thanksgiving, the Lynn Tech football team watched as St. Mary’s hung 38 points on them enroute to a shutout win and a sixth straight win over the Tigers. That loss finished off a 1-9 season for Tech. But there was light at the end of the tunnel for the Tigers in the fact that the nucleus of that team was all juniors and were coming back for their senior season.Well, that 15-member senior class got a season to remember and closed it out on Wednesday by returning the favor to St. Mary’s with a 38-0 blanking of the Spartans at Manning Field.”We’ve really had a great year,” Tech coach Gary Sverker said.”We had 15 seniors coming back from last season and they were dedicated to coming back and sticking together. And it culminated (Wednesday).”On a night dominated by Tech, it was that senior class at the forefront of the dominance.Running back John Jones was the clear workhorse for Tech on a cold and rainy night. Running behind a mammoth offensive line which was opening gaping holes in the St. Mary’s defense, Jones carried 24 times for 142 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The performance was a cap to a season that saw Jones run for nearly 1,000 yards in just nine games.”He really had a great game,” Sverker said. “And when we’re in that Stack-I, plays are open and we’re going to keep going to them.”Jones’ backfield mate, Otis Green, also made life difficult for St. Mary’s as his 47 yards rushing were a nice complement to Jones. Green also added a pair of two-point conversions in his final game as a Tiger. But it was the player engineering the offense, quarterback Jose Rios, who put together one of his best games of the season in his final go-round.One of two players, Erickson Seang being the other, to have been around the Tiger program since the eighth grade, Rios was simply outstanding in the miserable conditions. His 14-yard completion to Jake Canty on the game’s first play set the tone for the evening. He was also efficient in getting the ball to both of his bruising backs before his 30-yard touchdown pass to Canty late in the first quarter made it 14-0 Tech and with the Tiger defense in a stingy mood, the lead was seemingly unassailable.”(Wednesday) was their night and they had fun out there,” Sverker said.Rios finished 5-of-11 for 120 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Canty in his final performance on the Manning stage. He also rushed for 16 yards and was in on three pass breakups on defense.Speaking of that defense, which allowed a grand total of 46 yards in total offense and forced four turnovers, no one was better than defensive back Stefon Carter.Carter picked off two of the four passes starting quarterback Shaun Kehoe attempted and was awarded the T’O’Connor Award as Tech’s best defensive player.Carter also was deadly on offense as he caught two bombs from Rios for 71 yards, helping to set up two of the Tigers’ touchdowns.”Last year kind of was a driving force for us to get everybody going,” Sverker said.”We were young last year, kind of like St. Mary’s this year, and it takes time to grow as a team.”
