SWAMPSCOTT ? At Blocksidge Field on Saturday, the girls from Swampscott weren’t just playing for bragging rights. They were trying to make history. In the annual flag football game between the two schools, the seniors from Swampscott came away with a 12-6 victory over their rivals from Marblehead. The victory was significant in that it marked the 10th straight year Swampscott has prevailed in the contest. After the game, Swampscott coach Joe Tenney said his team worked hard for the chance at a decade of dominance.”They’re loving this win,” Tenney said. “They put lots of pressure on themselves to get the streak to double-digits. They played unbelievable.”On the opposite sideline, Marblehead team supervisor Jacqui Bouchard was quick to give her team players credit for their effort.”My girls played very well,” Bouchard said. “They handled themselves with respect on and off the field, and they worked hard.”With the first half ending in a 6-6 deadlock, Swampscott took control of the game in the third quarter. After a Marblehead punt to start the half, the Big Blue began what would be the game’s decisive drive from their own 5-yard line. What followed was a grueling 15-play, 95-yard drive that took nearly ten minutes off the clock. Maddie Cleary (8 carries, 29 yards) and Jacquelyn Ball (12 carries, 97 yards) did most of the heavy lifting on the drive, combining for nine carries and 60 yards. Finally, Cleary took the ball right up the middle for a 7-yard score, giving her team a 12-6 lead early in the fourth quarter.”I couldn’t have scored there without the help from my offensive line,” Cleary said. “I’ve never played football before, so (scoring) was the best feeling ever. It was awesome.”However, Marblehead wasn’t ready to throw in the towel. On the ensuing possession, Juliet Munroe (7 carries, 135 yards) broke free for what looked to be the tying score. At the last second, though, Swampscott’s Katherine Gorham prevented a touchdown with a diving stop, halting Munroe’s progress at the Swampscott 15.Suddenly energized by the play, Swampscott’s defense stopped the Magicians on four straight plays, and the team was able to regain possession with just over four minutes to play. From there, Ball was able to pick up a few key first downs on short-yardage situations, allowing her team to run out the clock and secure the victory.Ultimately, Cleary said, the difference for the Big Blue was their ability to come together as a team.”We knew Marblehead would want to win really badly,” Cleary said. “But the whole team came together. We became one today.”The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with the teams trading possessions early on while both squads tried to find a rhythm. Swampscott struck first to begin the second quarter, as Paula Jackson took her only carry of the game for a 5-yard touchdown and a 6-0 Swampscott lead.Marblehead, though, answered right back on the next play from scrimmage. Munroe outran the defense for a 72-yard touchdown to bring her team right back into a 6-6 tie.Munroe nearly added another long touchdown on the next drive for the Magicians. She ran for what looked like a 58-yard score, but the play was called back after a holding penalty on Marblehead.Other significant performances for Swampscott included Kellie McHugh (7 carries, 69 yards) and Carissa Roche (4 carries, 22 yards). Laura Walsh-Rogalski (1 rush, 36 yards) chipped in for Marblehead. After the game, Gorham said the work put in by her team paid off with the victory.”We practiced for three weeks, five days a week,” Gorham said. “We worked so hard; we were really dedicated. But this is everything we wanted.”
