SALEM – A Lynn man who led police on a wild chase after he allegedly kidnapped his former girlfriend at gunpoint and violated a court order previously is held without bail at the Middleton Jail, pending a dangerousness hearing, after pleading innocent. In Salem Superior Court Friday morning, Michael V. Chiappini, 39, of 285 Lynn Shore Drive, #103, entered his not guilty plea at his arraignment to charges of kidnapping, unarmed burglary in the nighttime, larceny of a motor vehicle, subsequent offense, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, causing serious bodily injury, operating a motor vehicle negligently, assault and battery on a public employee, wanton destruction of property, two counts of violation of a court order, assault with a dangerous weapon, threats to commit a crime, aggravated assault and battery, resisting arrest and being a habitual offender before Judge David A. Lowy.Assistant District Attorney Melissa A. Woodard maintains that Chiappini poses a danger to the community and the victim and that he should be held without bail pending trial.Lowy set down Nov. 30 for a dangerousness hearing to determine the issue. In the meantime, Chiappini is held without bail pending the outcome of the hearing.Charges stem from several incidents in Lynn earlier this year.On March 20, Chiappini is alleged to have held his then girlfriend against her will for several hours. He tied her hands and feet together pointing a knife at her and threatening to kill her while she had an active court order out against him. When police arrested him three days later after he went back to his girlfriend?s apartment, he threatened to kill himself with a razor unless police left, but police used a stun gun to get him under control before taking him into custody. Then on the night of August 30 he apparently stole a SUV and early the next day he drove to 55 Lawrence Road in Lynn where his girlfriend was staying with her new boyfriend. He allegedly broke into the house through a kitchen window and confronted her boyfriend, threatening to shoot him as he broke a beer bottle on the floor, nearly striking him.He forced his former girlfriend from the house into the SUV and took off while her boyfriend called police.Police responding to the scene gave pursuit and chased Chiappini on a high-speed chase for about two miles, where the pursuit ended in a fiery crash between an officer?s vehicle and Chiappini?s SUV at the intersection of Western Avenue and Centre Street in Lynn.Chiappini sustained severe injury to his head, face and body from the crash and was placed into custody after a brief struggle with authorities. The victim was found lying on the floor of the front seat of the vehicle. Both were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.Defense lawyer Jennifer B. Koiles is representing Chiappini since he has been deemed indigent, meaning he has no money to hire his own attorney, the state will pay all costs, but he has to pay $150 towards that legal representation.-30-
