LYNN – The man struck and killed by a commuter rail train at the Lynn Central Square station on Wednesday has been identified as Stephen Hatfield, 49, of Essex Street in Lynn.Joe Pesatauro, spokesman for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, said the medical examiner ruled Hatfield’s death a suicide. The accident disrupted hundreds of passengers during the rush hour commute who were traveling on the Newburyport/Rockport bound train, while travelers at North Station in Boston experienced significant delays.Margaret Laube, of 534 Essex St., Lynn, said Hatfield was a housemate at a congregate housing run by Bridgewell.”We wondered when he didn’t come home Wednesday night for his meds,” she said, explaining that Hatfield had diabetes and other problems.According to Laube, she learned of Hatfield’s death through the Bridgewell program director.Laube said Hatfield held a job, though did not say what that was, and that he enjoyed walking and riding his bicycle and took the bus around the city.Laube said Hatfield’s family, who she believes is from Melrose, cleaned out his room on Friday. She said his family may have a service for him in Melrose.”We’ll also have a service for him here,” she said.
