BREWSTER – Salem State College senior Brian Cawley of Lynnfield battled 30-mile an hour winds and a stomach flu to take first place in the All Divisions New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship Tournament held at the Captains Course in Brewster.Cawley led the 209-player field both days, shooting a two-under par 70 for the first round and a two-over par 74 for the second.Cawley was the only golfer to post an even par score (144) for the tournament while helping lead the Vikings to a fourth place finish overall and a first place showing among the Division 3 schools who competed. The University of Rhode Island duplicated its 2006 championship performance by recording a two-day total score of 608.The Rams were followed by the University of Connecticut (608), Bryant University (614) and Salem State (619) in the 42 school field.”Brian was just outstanding,” SSC coach Steve Campbell said. “He stayed focused and really played top golf.”In playing against Division 1 schools like the University of Rhode Island and the University of Connecticut, Cawley was facing players who are on full athletic scholarships for golf, Campbell said, adding “Brian beat them all.”Campbell said it was cold, overcast and the wind was whipping at a constant 30-miles an hour, making it difficult to hit the ball into the wind or with the wind. The conditions didn’t seem to faze Cawley.”Brian’s a very accomplished golfer,” Campbell said. “He’s our captain. He had an excellent fall season and a wonderful tournament schedule over the summer.”Cawley, a business major, qualified for the Mass Open this summer and the semfinals of the Mass Amateur. He won teh North Shore Amateur.Cawley had plenty of help from his SSC teammates yesterday. The Viking linksters also received an outstanding performance from sophomore Jeff Santora (Salem) who posted a 151 (72-79) which landed him in seven way tie at No. 8.
