The St. John’s Prep golf team hasn’t, well, played like the St. John’s Prep golf team at times this season. The Eagles uncharacteristically lost a couple of matches in conference play this season, but on Monday at Beverly Golf & Tennis Club, the Prep returned to form at the most opportune of times. For the third time in four years and the seventh in nine, the Eagles claimed the Division 1 North title with a seven-shot win over defending champion Andover on a sun-soaked day.”We finally played the kind of golf as a team that we’re capable of,” Prep coach Larry O’Neill said. “The kids really played well. I guess it just was our day.”The Prep simply was more consistent than the other nine teams that took to the links on Monday. Five of the Eagles’ six players shot rounds of 80 or lower, led by Mike Kasper’s round of 73 that gave him the individual championship.Teammate Corey Amirault shot a 75 and came home in a four-way tie for third overall. Andover’s Sean Burke was second with a 74.”Mike had a great round (Monday) and Corey has played well at times this year,” O’Neill said.Lynn native Bryant Cote had a round of 78, and Mike Mullavey’s 79 was the final score the Eagles counted for their total of 305. Nick Maccario shot 80 and Emilio Bardini rounded out the Prep scores with an 87.Northeastern Conference North champion Peabody struggled to ninth place with a score of 342. But the day wasn’t all bad for the Tanners as Joshua Page qualified for the individual tournament at Marlborough CC next Monday with a 75 to share third place.Division 3 NorthA pair of local teams earned spots into next Monday’s state finals in Plainville as Danvers finished second and St. Mary’s came in third. Weston won the title with a team score of 311 at Far Corner GC in West Boxford. For the Spartans, who finished third as a team in last year’s state finals, just getting back to the finals was a great accomplishment.”The whole idea was to qualify,” St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee said. “I am very proud of them and it was really impressive.”The Spartans were led by Jon Baldwin’s 4-over par round of 76, which placed him fifth in the individual tournament. Jesse Powers also cracked the 80 mark with a 79, while Shaun Velez carded an 82 and Tom McPherson shot 84 to give the Spartans a team total of 321.For the Falcons, it was a day of consistency. Jon Rinaldi led the way with a round of 76, which tied him with Baldwin for fourth place.John Curran shot a 78 to miss the individual cut by one shot. Joining him at that number was Swampscott’s Anthony DiLisio. The Big Blue placed sixth as a team at 329.Matt Michel shot an 80 and Larry Saggese’s 85 was the final score that counted to the Falcons’ total of 319.Weston was simply dominant on the challenging Far Corner layout. The Wildcats, who barely missed a state title last year, put three players in the 70s and didn’t have to count scores of 82 and 87. Michael Buenaventura shot 76 while Brendan Meagher and Peter White each shot 77.Lynnfield finished seventh with a total of 336, led by Paul O’Brien’s 82. Winthrop finished at 363 and Marblehead came in at 369 to round out the North Shore contingent. In Division 2 North, both Salem and Gloucester missed the cut teamwise, but the Fishermen’s Josh Salah finished second in the individual tournament to make next Monday’s finals.
