LYNN – A 16-inch water main pipe is in the process of being replaced by the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (MWRA) along the odd numbered side of Newhall Street from Sagamore Street to the Lynnway.According to Public Works Commissioner Jay Fink, the pipeline replacement project began Oct. 1 and will continue for roughly eight more weeks.Work hours are scheduled for 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.Crews will be cutting into the existing sidewalk, excavate and remove the existing MWRA water main and install a new water main in its place.?The work commenced with the intersection last week and there is a lot of pipe work that has to take place as well,” Fink said. “Depending on the weather, the final restoration may not happen until the spring. Temporary patches may be placed here and there.”Fink said a public meeting, hosted in conjunction with Ward 4 City Councilor Richard Colucci, was held in September to inform residents of the project.?Rich was chiefly concerned with the impact to the residents and set up the meeting to provide the opportunity for direct discussion with the project team,” he said. The MWRA has hired A-1 Exterminators to conduct pest control in the area of construction, and the police department will conduct details during construction hours.Fink said water, sewer and gas services might be affected during the construction period. Access to driveways and walkways will be limited during the workday, but will be accessible in the evening. In addition, on street parking on the odd side of the street will be restricted within designated work zones. Notices will be posted for alternative parking.?I understand the need to upgrade the water main,” he said. “When all is said and done, I want to make sure that the construction disruptions in the neighborhood result in new sidewalks, new trees and any damage to the streets be repaired.”
