NAHANT – Three call firefighters who have more than 100 years of service among them are retiring and were recognized by the town and their colleagues Thursday evening.Andrew Puleo, Mark Scaglione and Brian Douillette have been an asset to the department, according to Town Administrator Mark Cullinan.”All three of them have decades of service to the town,” he said. “We appreciate everything they have done. We hope the next generation can be as helpful as they have been.”Puleo, who has been with the department for 42 years, said state law requires firefighters to retire when they are 65 years old. After more than four decades with the department, Puleo said his wife still kids him about his first night as a call firefighter.”The first night the alarm went off at about 2 a.m., I had just got out of the shower and was getting in bed,” he said. “I said to Roz ‘There’s the alarm. I’m glad I’m not on.’ She said, ‘Yup. You better get going.’ So up and out I went.”Puleo, an employee of the Boston Public Schools, said when he joined the department firefighters wore leather helmets, canvas coats with buckles and rubber boots.”I’ve seen a lot of changes in firefighting,” he said. “I had a lot of wonderful years on the fire department and always enjoyed it.”Puleo said one thing that hasn’t changed over the years is the teamwork.”I break the (team) word out,” he said. “Together Everyone Accomplished More.”Scaglione, who served as president of the Nahant Call Fire Fighters’ Association for almost a decade, said he joined the department when he was 24 years old.”I was on the Causeway and there was a terrible car wreck,” he said. “I did what I could to help until firefighters and police got there. The next day I told Chief John Quinn I wanted to join the Fire Department. I like helping people and it gets in your blood.”Scaglione, who owns PoPo’s restaurant in Swampscott, said firefighters frequently refer to each other as brothers and that is exactly what the members of the Nahant Fire Department are.”These guys are the best,” he said. “I could call them up if I ran out of gas in New Hampshire and they’d be there. They are real true brothers and the best crew I’ve ever worked with.”Puleo continues to voluntarily serve as special assistant to Chief Robert Ward and remains a member of the town’s Ocean Rescue Team.Douillette was a member of the department for 38 years and Scaglione for 29 years.U.S. Rep. John F. Tierney and state Rep. Steven Walsh, a Lynn Democrat, presented the retiring firefighters with proclamations honoring them for such lengthy public service.”These three Jakes together have given more than 100 years of service to the town of Nahant. When most people are sleeping, they’re up fighting fires, responding to car accidents and doing the many other things that firefighters do. We’re lucky to have such guys on the Fire Department,” said Nahant Fire Call Fire Fighters Association President David Liscio.
