LYNN-Imagine free artist space with cathedral ceilings and large street-level windows providing a view of Central Square.John Olson, owner of Columbia Insurance in downtown Lynn, is offering the first floor of his building at 31 Central Square to artists interested in running a temporary cooperative in the space.According to Olson, the 2,100-square-feet of space is unfinished, with sheetrock walls, cement floor and a 21-foot-high ceiling. The layout features plenty of interior walls for exhibiting artwork and the front windows allow natural light to filter inside.Olson is looking for a group of artists who would use the space for free in exchange for ensuring it is occupied and open at least four weekdays, one weekend day, and one or two evenings. He would take a 25-percent commission on any artwork sold to cover the building utility costs, but he is also willing to negotiate.Central Square is already home to the LynnArts galleries and live performance theater, the Raw Art Works studio and alternative educational program, and the Gulu Gulu Café where many local artists display their work. The artist co-op proposition has been posted online by LynnArts Director Susan Halter and emailed to the regional artist community.Olson is president of the Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce, which has been advocating for growth of the city’s so-called creative economy.Olson’s ultimate goal is to rent the space. He can be reached at [email protected] or at (781) 598-5000.
