Junior Peter Cavallaro accomplished a feat every golfer dreams of, and more often than not, never experiences.Cavallaro shot a hole-in-one on the 140-yard 8th hole while shooting a 39 for the course in Salem’s 233-271 victory over Saugus at Olde Salem Greens.”I was talking to a pretty good golfer of 45 years, and he’s never done it,” said Sachem coach Tom Doyle. “It’s very rare and very special. It’s very rare golfers of any level ever do it.”Saugus improved its record to 10-7-1, and the win qualifies the team for the state tournament with two regular-season matches still remaining.Sachems Beau Theriault was the match’s medalist, shooting a 36. Wes Koen finished second with a 37 and Harry Noone third with a 39.Cavallaro’s hole-in-one was the second by a Salem golfer in the last few weeks. Senior Owen Grover nailed a hole-in-one of his own while playing Gloucester.”I’ve coached for eight years and never seen it for us or against us,” Doyle said. “It’s pretty incredible it would happen to two guys on the same team within a few weeks of each other.”St. John’s 39, St. Mary’s 33At Gannon Golf Course, the Eagles (9-3) picked up wins in five spots. Bryan Cote of Lynn fared well on his home course, shooting a 34 and winning his match 5 1/2-3 1/2. Mike Kasper won 6-3 and shot a 34; Jon Lane won 6-3 and shot a 37; Steve DiCarlo and Corey Amirault each won their matches, 5-4.St. Mary’s (13-4) had wins from sophomore Kevin McCarthy, who shot a 36 at No. 2 for a 5 1/2-3 1/2 decision; Jesse Powers shot a 36 in the five spot to win 5-4 and Shaun Velez shot a 37 in the seven spot to win 5-4.FIELD HOCKEYFenwick 3, Malden 1At Malden, the Crusaders improved their record to 7-5-1 on the season with strong play on both sides of the field.Lauren McHugh (Kelly Moran assist) scored early and assisted on Kara Charochak’s goal just before halftime to give Fenwick a 2-0 lead heading into the break.Malden did not go quietly. The Golden Tornadoes scored minutes after play resumed to cut their deficit to one. Despite the lapse, the Crusaders continued their stingy defensive play, only allowing four total shots, and Kara Gray (Charochak) iced the game with a few minutes remaining.Fenwick coach Marybeth Mahoney was pleased with her team’s play in both the midfield and backfield, and said Erin Botticelli played especially well.Revere 2, Danvers 2At Revere, the Patriots (3-8-2) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Paige Licata, only to see Danvers tie it up. Revere regained the lead on a Stephanie Bruno goal, but once again, Danvers came up with the equalizer – with 15 seconds remaining.
