PEABODY – She may not have won the big prize, but Peabody native Shaina Trotta won lots of memories appearing on Wheel of Fortune Monday night. But the 20-year old student at Harvard University didn’t get to see her big TV moment. She’s thousands of miles away in Scotland, studying abroad at the University of Edinburg.”It’s kind of sad,” Trotta said. “My friends at school (had) a big party. The Facebook invitation was up and I had to decline.”Tom Trotta, Shaina’s father, said that she auditioned for the show on a whim last spring. She got a call back in mid-July and was on a plane to the studio in L.A. by the beginning of September. Her dad went along with her.”She’s pretty adventurous,” he said. “Always trying something new, something we don’t always expect her to do.”Both Trottas said that their experience on the set was a bit different than they would have imagined.”It was pretty awesome,” said Tom. “But they were very strict with communication between any guests and the contestants.”He went on to say that any sort of suspicious gesture before, during, or after the show, would be cause for the contestant to get eliminated. Such was not the case for Shaina, who played a fair game.”I was excited, maybe a little bit nervous,” Shaina said. “It’s a lot harder to actually play the game than it is to solve the puzzles while sitting at home.”Shaina said that between following instructions from her “contestant coach” to smile and clap, focusing on spinning the wheel – which she said was a lot smaller and not as dazzling in person – and guessing letters at the same time, it was pretty difficult. One thing that surprised her was how much editing was involved in the show. She said that the camera crew frequently stopped taping to make sure everything appeared to run smoothly.”It looks so seamless, absolutely continuous on television,” said Shaina. But that was not the case during her show when one of the wedges on the wheel became dislodged. They had to stop taping, reset the wedge, and then re-spin the wheel.During the taping of another show (six were shot in one day), Shaina said that one of the male contestants got so excited when he won, that he shouted “Holy Crap!” Apparently, that kind of language doesn’t fly with Wheel execs, and they made him re-enact his excitement saying “Holy Cow!” instead.Shaina’s appearance on Wheel of Fortune aired Monday night on Boston’s WSBK-TV38 at 7 p.m.
