If there ever was a time for a team to return a kick for a touchdown, it came on Saturday for St. John’s Prep at the start of the second half against St. John’s (Shrewsbury). The Eagles, losers of three consecutive games, had struggled in the first half, leading only 6-0 on Scott Darby’s touchdown pass to Pat Dempsey. But when Brendan Felder took the kick at his four and returned it 96 yards for a touchdown, the Eagles got a big boost.”It was uncomfortable to be on a three-game losing streak,” St. John’s coach Jim O’Leary said. “We’re back on the winning side. We had a couple turnovers and penalties early, but turned it around.”From there, the Prep rode the running of Derek Coppola and Pat Higgins to a 25-14 win that evened the Eagles’ record at 3-3.Coppola rushed for 81 yards in the game while Higgins added an 11-yard touchdown in the third quarter that gave the Prep a 19-0 lead. Shrewsbury closed the lead to 13 points on John Perron’s 30-yard pass to John Andreoli, but Darby’s two-yard keeper in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach.BOYS SOCCERDracut 3, St. Mary’s 1At Dracut, the Spartans (7-3-4) went against one of the top five teams in the state and played well despite trailing 2-0 after just 15 minutes.
