LYNN – The Water and Sewer Commission hopes repair work to eliminate flooding on Surfside Road can be duplicated on the other side of the city.Commission Executive Director Daniel O’Neill said drainage work is planned for River and Bates streets to eliminate flooding in the vicinity of the Saugus River.”The area floods quite often,” O’Neill said, adding he will discuss the work tonight with commission members.Water and Sewer workers made flood relief repairs to the drain system serving Surfside Road during the summer. The apartment buildings along the road are located across from the Nahant Rotary. Heavy storms combined with high tide typically flood the road and sections of the rotary and Lynnway near it.”The problem is that the outlet is so deep in the mudflats down by the Lynnway that the tide affects it,” O’Neill said. The commission is also slated to get an update tonight on plans to improve water hydrant flow to Lois Lane, the site of a proposed housing development off Linwood Road. The Fire Department will not sign off on plans to build the West Lynn development until water pressure to the Lois Lane hydrant is improved. The water line serving the hydrant must be cleaned or replaced and commissioners last month said the cost involved in doing the work cannot be borne entirely by the ratepayers.
