Tim Harrington, a social studies teacher at Bishop Fenwick, will take over as coach of the school’s girls basketball team, replacing Paul Lyman.Harrington got the offer Thursday morning. He is entering his fourth year with the program, having spent last year as junior varsity coach and the previous two years as freshman coach.”I always had hopes of succeeding (Lyman),” Harrington said. “Paul’s a great coach. It seemed to happen sooner than I’d anticipated and hoped.”Harrington is a 1982 alumnus of Beverly High School and attended Springfield College and Salem State College, graduating from the latter. He has taught at Fenwick for seven years and says he’ll work toward a fast style of basketball.”It’s going to be very similar to Paul’s,” Harrington said. “I’d like to play up-tempo, play the game as fast as possible. There’s not a lot of stars, but a lot of guard types.”The new coach will retain the current staff of Dave Dugan (varsity assistant) and Karen Guillemette (freshman coach).Asked why Lyman left, Harrington said that his predecessor was a three-sport varsity coach in football (defensive coordinator), basketball and softball and added, “I truly believed he just got burnt out and decided to focus on football and softball.”As of Thursday evening, the girls team did not know it had a new coach.”I want to let it sink in,” Harrington said.
