PEABODY – The so-called blindfolds could soon to be taken off newly elected School Committee members, thanks to a motion made by Mike Moutsoulas during Tuesday night?s meeting.Reminiscing about his first days as a member of the School Committee, Moutsoulas recalled only one correspondence from the city prior to taking his new position. It was he who took the initiative to reach out and meet the other members.Moutsoulas said that the general feeling towards newbies was, “That?s your seat, now get to work.” And that?s something he?d like to change.?I?d like to see an established procedure,” Moutsoulas said. What he has in mind is a formal orientation to get new members up to speed on the issues surrounding Peabody schools. His proposed plan involves three steps, including a meet and greet long before taking office, distribution of policy manuals, studies, budgets, etc., and shipping new members materials from each regular meeting held prior to their starting date.School Committee member Beverly Ann Griffin Dunne agreed wholeheartedly, stating that the more time a newcomer has to get familiar with the inner workings of the Committee, the better off.?This will be extremely helpful to new members,” Dunne said.Mayor Michael Bonfanti agreed with the intent of the proposal, but suggested that it be looked over by the Quality and Standards Subcommittee first before moving it along. The proposal brought back fond memories for School Committee member David McGeney. He said that years ago, an informal dinner among new and old members was held around the holidays to acquaint everyone with each other. McGeney said that the dinner provided a real benefit to the Committee, and he would like to discuss possibly resurrecting it in the near future.School Committee member Ed Nizwantowski highly approved of Moutsoulas plan, saying it?s “a darn good idea.”The Committee voted in favor of the proposal and will await further discussion by the Quality and Standards Subcommittee.
