SAUGUS – Debra Panetta said she has struggled with the decision of whether to run for the Board of Selectmen or the Charter Commission, but Thursday she made her decision when she opted out of a run for Selectmen.”Charter is a once in a lifetime opportunity, not necessarily to make changes but the make recommendations, to go through the process of looking at new ways of governing,” she said.Panetta said she believes that when most people think of a Charter Commission they think of people trying to turn the town into a city, but that isn’t so. Panetta envisions the charter commission holding forums and seeking input from residents, collecting viewpoints and collaborating on possible changes.”It’s really very exciting,” she said.Panetta said she withdrew her name from the selectmen’s race about 8 a.m. Thursday morning. Because she had made her decision to concentrate on landing a spot on the Charter Commission, she said she felt it wasn’t fair to leave her name on the ballot for Selectmen. But Panetta’s race for a seat may be for naught if voter’s fail to pass a ballot question asking for the commission to be formed.”I hope people vote for it,” she said. “People have nothing to lose by voting for this.”Any changes the commission comes up with would be put to voters before they are put into action.Panetta’s withdrawal from the Selectmen’s race came in tandem with perennial candidate Janette Fasano’s. The result is for the first time in 27 years there will be no women serving on the Board of Selectmen.Panetta said she was sorry to hear Fasano was not running.”I think Janette has done a phenomenal job,” she said. “She just knows so much, she has so much history and she is a very bright lady.”
