The St. Mary’s volleyball team is in its third year as a varsity program and for the third time, the Spartans have qualified for the state tournament.St. Mary’s defeated North Cambridge Catholic, 3-0, Friday at Cambridge. Coach Dave Giarusso used his bench liberally in this one and the results were good. Amanda Smalley did a good job serving and Tori Faieta and Megan Hanlon played well in the middle.Although qualifying for the tournament was on the Spartans’ list of things to do this season, Giarusso said the next goal is to take it a step further than last year, when they lost in the Division 3 North semifinals to North Reading. MacKenzie Carpenter had 15 assists; other standouts were Rachel Negri (10 kills, 7 blocks); Janelle Rodriguez (4 kills, 3 blocks) and Liz Walsh and Dallas Harasim (3 kills).Lynnfield 3, Hamilton-Wenham 2At Lynnfield, the Pioneers dropped their first two games (25-23, 25-17) but then snared a victory by winning the final three games (25-17, 25-13, 15-11). Leading the way for Lynnfield were Andrea Marino and Abby Shove. Marino served well and established herself at the net while Shove provided a solid defensive option off the bench.GOLFBC High 231, St. Mary’s 208At Gannon Golf Course, the Spartans (9-3, 7-0 Catholic Central League) came up short despite strong performances by Jon Baldwin, who shot a 35 for 35 points; Jesse Powers, 36 for 32 points, and Tommy McPherson, 35 for 34 points.FIELD HOCKEYLynnfield 2, Triton 1At Byfield, two second-half goals by captain Molly Serino and Angela Arakelian finished the comeback win for the Pioneers. Lynnfield clinched a spot in the state tournament. For the Pioneers (10-2) goalie Melissa Williams made 16 saves.Waltham 3, Fenwick 1At Waltham, Kara Charochak tied the score for the Crusaders in the second half at one; however, it proved too little as their hosts put up two consecutive scores to pull out the win. For Fenwick, Erin Botticelli recorded an assist and goalie Courtney Nicolo made 13 saves.
