SWAMPSCOTT-A fitting tribute to a hometown hero was put in place on Wednesday afternoon at Swampscott Cemetery.The gravestone for United States Marine Captain Jennifer Harris, who was buried with full military honors in February, was installed at her final resting place.Harris, the only child of Raymond and Rosalie Harris, was a helicopter pilot with the elite HMM-364 Purple Foxes. She was killed Feb. 7 during her third tour of duty in Iraq ?when the helicopter she was piloting was shot down by insurgents just days before she was scheduled to return home.Following her 1996 graduation from Swampscott High School, Harris went to United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. and accepted a commission in the Marine Corp. After graduating from Annapolis, Harris went to flight school, graduating in late 2002, and, after joining her squadron, was deployed to Kuwait within two weeks. She supported troops in Operation Iraqi Freedom from February 2003 until October 2003. During her first deployment, Harris was the only female pilot and the youngest member of the squadron.Harris was the second military casualty from Swampscott in the Global War on Terror. Army Specialist Jared Raymond, 20, the first Swampscott military casualty in the Iraq War, was killed in action Sept. 19, 2006 in Iraq while serving with the 1st Battalion 66th Armored Regiment 4th Infantry Division. Raymond was killed when he was responding to an attack on a convoy and an improvised explosive device blew up the tank he was riding in.
