LYNN — Former Lynn English running back Brian Vaughan has been named the new football coach at Classical High School, principal Gene Constantino confirmed today.
Vaughan replaces Tim Phelps, who had coached the Rams for the previous nine seasons.
Vaughan, who lives in Everett, was the coach at South Boston High School (Excel) this past season, and the Knights were 2-7. However, Southie had been 0-11 in 2015.
Vaughan resurrected programs at both Pope John (leading the Tigers to a Super Bowl) and Boston English prior to taking the South Boston job.
“He was one of 10 tremendous applicants,” Constantino said. “But after the interviews, he was the unanimous choice of the committee.
“We think he’s a good fit for Classical,” Constantino said.
Vaughan was the featured running back on English’s 1990 Northeastern Conference-winning team that went to the Division 3 Eastern Mass. Super Bowl at Foxboro Stadium, where the Bulldogs fell to Case. Classical assistant principal Chris Warren was a quarterback on that team.
Vaughan played at Northeastern for Swampscott native Barry Gallup, where he set a school career rushing record of 2,663 yards, a mark that was broken by Saugus’ L.J. McKanas when he played there.
In addition to his head coaching stints, Vaughan also served as an assistant at English, Winthrop and Everett. He also coached for Everett Pop Warner.
