LYNNFIELD — Although the Pioneers played well in bursts on Friday, the Lynnfield boys lacrosse team simply made too many mistakes and fell to a strong Triton team, 14-4, at Pioneer Stadium. According to Lynnfield coach Joe Papagni, the main problems were too many unforced errors and turnovers.
“We just made too many mistakes out there today,” said Papagni. “We had some great spurts out there early on, but all the turnovers and bad passes just can’t happen. Then on defense, we’re still getting caught out of position on a bunch of plays, so we need to clean that up as well.”
Peter Look scored two goals for the Pioneers in the loss, while Harry Drislane and Jack Razzaboni each scored one goal. Anthony Murphy and Peter Razzaboni each had one assist. Goalkeeper Kingsley Corona was strong in net with 17 saves in the loss.
For Triton, Bryan Wideberg led the way with four goals and Sam Aponas had three goals and one assist. Liam Spillane had two goals and one assist, Ryan Sheedy had one goal and five assists and John D’Eufemia had one goal and one assist. Drew Bouley had one goal and Colby Buccheri had one assist.
Triton took an early 2-0 lead within the first three minutes of the game on two goals from Aponas. Look answered for Lynnfield about 15 seconds later to make it 2-1, but that was as close as the Pioneers would come in the game. The Vikings notched two more goals before the end of the first quarter on goals from Aponas and Wideberg to close the first quarter with a 4-1 lead.
Lynnfield tried to get the momentum rolling in its favor with the first goal of the second quarter, but Triton went on a three-goal run to close the half with a 7-2 lead.
The Pioneers did the same thing to start the second half, with Look scoring his second goal of the game 30 seconds into the third quarter. But once again, Triton went on a run, this time a six-goal run, to put the game out of reach at 13-3. Lynnfield scored its final goal with about four minutes remaining when Drislane picked up a loose ball in front of the net and flicked it home. After one final goal from Bouley, the Vikings walked away with the big win at 14-4.
Lynnfield fell to 5-10 on the season with the loss on Friday. Moving forward for the Pioneers, it’s all about continuing to improve and becoming more consistent all-around.
“We’ve just got to keep plugging away at this point,” said Papagni. “We’ve got five games left, four of them in the league (Cape Ann League) and we’ve got to tighten up our play if we want to notch a couple wins before the year is out. So we’re just going to keep working.”
The Pioneers will take on Manchester-Essex at Pioneer Stadium for Lynnfield’s Senior Night on Monday at 7 p.m.
