Lynnfield native Anne Marie Tobin is one of six new inductees to the Massachusetts Golf Hall of Fame.
Anne Marie Tobin of Lynnfield is among six new inductees into the Massachusetts Golf Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame was launched 12 years ago in concert with the opening of the William F. Connell Golf House and Museum on the grounds of TPC Boston in Norton. This will be the third group inducted.
Tobin won the Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts amateur seven times (1988, ’91, ’92, ’93, ’94, ’95 and 2000). The three-time WGAM Player of the Year also was a quarterfinalist in both the 1990 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur and 1991 U.S. Women’s Amateur.
Tobin, who has been an attorney specializing in non-profits since 1985, is the sports editor of the Lynnfield and Peabody Weekly News, both of which are owned by Essex Media Group, also the parent company of The Item.
“I feel honestly the benefits that I’ve had in my life from playing golf are far greater than what I’ve given to it,” said Tobin. “Golf got me into the college of my choice (Mt. Holyoke), and I met my husband (James) through the game.
“This is totally unexpected,” Tobin said. “It’s a thrill. It’s nice to be recognized.”
“We are honored and excited to induct a third class of inductees,” said Tom Bagley, chairman of the Massachusetts Golf Hall of Fame Committee. “The committee has continued to be impressed by the depth and quality of individuals who have made indelible marks on the sport here in the Bay State. The class of 2016 is no different. Their impact on the game has been felt both on and off the golf course and their individual legacies are second to none.”
Among Tobin’s honors and awards are the naming of the Massachusetts Women’s Golf Association Player of the Year award as the “Anne Marie Tobin Player of the Year Award” in 1994; she was named the Massachusetts Golf Association Female Amateur of the 20th Century; and she was a winner of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund Richard F. Connolly Jr. Distinguished Service Award in 2008.
Aside from seven WGAM amateur titles, Tobin was five Massachusetts Keyes Cup Stroke Play titles, captured the New England Women’s Amateur championship in 1990; was a three-time Women’s Open Low Amateur; three-time recipient of the award named in her honor; US Golf Association quarterfinalist; as well as a quarterfinalist for the 1991 US Women’s Amateur and the 1990 US Women’s Mid-Amateur; made the USGA Round of 16 in 1990 in the Women’s Amateur;and was a USGA Qualifying Medalist in the US Women’s Amateur and US Women’s Mid-Am. She is also a five-time WGAM Mother-Daughter champion with her daughter Abigail.
Other inductees are Bob Crowley, Bill Flynn, Joe Lazaro, Frank Vana, Jr. and Herbert Warren Wind.
