LYNN — For the Wyoma Little League All-Stars Wednesday, things came together in a big way. For East Lynn, things fell apart.
The final score reflects that. Wyoma won, 9-1, at Volunteer Field, and now has eight days off before its next game against Lynnfield. It’s a break that manager Rick Anderson says his players deserve.
“They’ve been working awfully hard,” said Anderson. “A lot of practicing. So we’ll give them some time off before we get back to it.”
For East Lynn’s Matt Morin, the feeling was a little different.
“Errors really make a difference,” said Morin, whose team’s stay in the winner’s bracket of the District 16 tournament was cut short by errors at crucial moments. As a result, the East Lynners will be playing Pine Hill Thursday (5:45) at Swampscott.
The score stood a 1-1 in the top of the third inning when the fireworks that didn’t involve bottle rockets going off all over Keaney Park began. Brendan Falasca led the inning with a single, and Jack Marks followed with a booming homer over the left-field fence.
“We hit the ball well tonight,” said Anderson. “I think we may have left some runners on the bases early in the game, but by the third, we started cleaning them up.”
Wyoma scored two more runs in the inning, the key moment coming when Aiden George reached on an error with runners on second and third.
That made the score 5-1, and it was left to Wyoma’s Falasca to keep East Lynn at bay.
He lasted into the fifth before reaching his pitching limit and giving way to Shea Palmer, who finished strong.
Falasca’s only trouble, after giving up a run in the first, came in the bottom of the third inning when he loaded the bases with one out. But after a little pep talk from Anderson, he came back to strike out Brady Warren and then get Anthony Cedeno to foul out to first.
Falasca launched one over the left field fence in the top of the fourth to make it 6-1.
Errors led to two more Wyoma runs in the fifth inning to make it 8-1, and Marks legged out a triple and then came home on a miscue for Wyoma’s final run.
Lynnfield 6, Saugus Am. 4
At Swampscott, Lynnfield improved to 2-0, and for the second game in a row, won on a sixth-inning rally.
Tied at 4-4 going into the top of the sixth, Devin Bolger and Jake Mallett beat out a pair of infield hits and scored — Bolger on an infield error and Mallett on a passed ball.
John McKrell started and pitched 5 ⅔ innings, leaving with one out and bases loaded, for Henry Caulfield, who slammed the door shut for the save.
McKrell helped his own cause when he doubled and scored on an infield error, while Alex Gentile had two big hits. Nick Razzaboni and Taylor Thomas also had base hits, while Devin DeLuties scored one run.
The Americans will play July 6 against the winner of the Saturday’s Lynn Shore/Saugus National game.
In the completion of a rain-shortened game from Tuesday, Peabody blasted Saugus National, 14-1. The Nats are back in action Saturday (2) at Lynn Shore. Peabody is back at it tonight at West Lynn’s Flynn Field against Swampscott.
All games are at 5:45 unless noted.
