Tennis Roundup: St. Mary’s earns first win

Brady Ryan and the Spartans earned their first win of the season. 


The St. Mary’s boys tennis team notched its first win of the season, 3-2, over St. Joseph’s Prep on Wednesday.

“It’s a relief,” Spartans coach Brian Carlson said. “We have a win under our belts. Hopefully the winning continues for us now.”

Brady Ryan, per usual, led the way with a win in first singles, 6-0, 6-0. Matthew Gallego followed Ryan’s lead with a win in second singles, 6-3, 6-1. Landis Lin and Mason Jean-Baptiste paired up to get the Spartans a win in second doubles, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. St. Mary’s (1-10) looks to carry some momentum to today’s match against Cardinal Spellman.

“It helps that you have matches back to back,” Carlson said. “Going from a win to this match, I think it’ll help boost their confidence.”

Lynn English 4, Salem 1

Bulldogs (2-7) winners included Johnson Ngandjui at first singles, 6-1, 6-1, Andy Nguyen at second singles, 6-4, 6-4, Ble Ley at third singles, 6-1, 6-0, and the team of Abedom Gebreyesus and Iram Islam at second doubles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Lynn Classical 4, Danvers 1

Calvin Cheung earned the win in first singles, 6-4, 7-5. Moses Ba took the win in second singles, 6-1, 6-2. Stephen Ong and Gerry Ennis got the win in first doubles, 6-4, 6-1. Andy Ma and Jonathan Chase won in second doubles, 6-1, 6-1.

The Rams (7-2) hosts English today.

“We’re having a great season and the kids are working really hard, I’m really proud of them,” Classical coach Chris Hayward said.

Swampscott 4, Somerville 1

Will Talebian took the win in second singles, 6-1, 7-5. Steve Santanello grabbed a win in third singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The pair of Dan Johnson and Justin Ratner won first doubles, 7-6 (0), 6-2 and second doubles was won by the team of Ben Ringler and Robbie Jensen, 6-2, 6-3. Swampscott is 7-2.

Winthrop 5, Malden 0

Cory Cherico got the Vikings a win in first singles, 6-0, 6-1. Arthur Borash got a win in second singles,6-0, 6-0. Timmy Duyon won third singles, 6-1, 6-0. Matt Tarantino and Charlie Page paired up for a win in first doubles, 6-0, 10-8, 6-0. Kevin Dorr and Chris Finn teamed up to win second doubles, 6-0, 6-0. Winthrop (8-4) qualifies for the state tournament with the win and battles against Everett on Friday.

Bishop Fenwick 4, Matignon 1

Alex Mizioch won first singles, 6-2, 6-3. Greg Mattucci won second singles, 6-1, 6-1. Peter O’Brien and Nick Park won first doubles, 6-0, 6-1. The pair of Sean Loescher and Paul Papageorgeio won 6-0, 6-0. Fenwick (4-7) visits Malden Catholic today.

Beverly 5, Medford 0

Winners for Beverly included Enrico Costa, 6-0, 6-0, at first singles, Oliver Gibson, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, at second singles, Tommy George, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5, at third singles. The team of Travis MacPhail and Ryan Keve won at first doubles, 6-4, 6-6 (7-9), 6-3, and the team of Sam Titus and Gabriel Humvy won, 6-0, 6-1, at second doubles.

Andover 5, Prep 0

The Eagles fall to 8-3 with the loss and look to bounce back on Monday against Xaverian.

Marblehead 5, Everett 0

Justin Faia notched a win in first singles, 6-0, 6-0. Felix Litvak won in second singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Billy Ackerman took a win in third singles, 6-0, 6-1. Sam Orenstein and Garrett Tully won in first doubles, 6-0, 6-0. Mason Friedman and Harry Dolin won in second doubles, 6-2, 4-6, 10-4.  Marblehead (9-3, 9-0 NEC) visits Latin Academy today.

Lily Vu won first singles, 6-1, 6-0. Victoria Say won second singles, 6-0, 6-1. Kim Rodriguez won third singles, 6-1, 6-2. Diana Bui and Raymi Ramirez won first doubles 6-0, 6-2 and Janilza Martinez and Khammanny Phommachanh won second doubles, 6-3, 6-2. English improves to 3-7.

Swampscott 4, Somerville 1

Anna Cilley notched a win in first singles, 6-3, 6-1. Lily Sanphy won at third singles, 6-2, 6-1. Rachel Weiss and Cate McDonough won their match in first doubles, 6-0, 6-2 and the pair of Kseniya Yermakova and Georgia Cilley won its match 6-1, 6-1. Swampscott visits North Reading on Friday.
