The Lynn Classical Rams had an excellent showing at this past weekend’s Bay State Games. Elie Kalambayi, Dajon Wilson, Samson Srey and Tyler Way all participated in the games, and all made it to the championship round in at least one event.
Kalambayi, fresh off his trip to Nationals in North Carolina, placed first in the triple jump (42 feet, 8 inches), as well as the long jump with a personal best 20-11 1/4. He also finished second in the 100-meter dash (11.8 seconds). His results were good for a trip to the championship round at Fitchburg State on July 15.
Classical coach Angel Melendez said that Kalambayi only jumped twice in each event, since he’s still resting from all of the meets leading up to Nationals and the national event itself. But, Melendez added, his personal record in the long jump shows “great improvement.”
Wilson made it to the championship round in the long jump as well with a distance of 18-6, good for fifth place.
Srey made it to the championship in two events, placing third in the 110 hurdles (17.4) and fourth in the javelin (137-7).
Way, now a Classical graduate, competed in the age 18-39 open division. He finished fifth in the 100 (11.2), making it to the championship round.
Melendez said it was Way’s first time running the 100, since the recent grad has only run winter track (he plays baseball in the spring) where he ran the 55-meter dash. Melendez added that Way entered the Bay State Games to get ready for open trials for the UMass Lowell track and field team, which is a Division I program.
