The St. Mary’s golf team has had a dominant year on the course, and now the Spartans are one round away from a team state championship. St. Mary’s shot a team score of 310 at the MIAA Division 3 North tournament at Hillview Golf Course in North Reading to advance to the Division 3 state finals next Tuesday.
Aiden Emmerich, Christian Emmerich and Ryan Turenne each shot a 76 to lead the way for the Spartans, while Max Emmerich shot an 82 to give St. Mary’s a score of 310. Andrew Kreamer and Luke Smith each shot an 89.
“We had three guys step up today and play really well,” said St. Mary’s coach Jay Fiste. “Then Max (Emmerich) came in there and rounded out our score well even though it wasn’t his best day. Ryan (Turenne) had his best 18-hole round of his career so that was a huge boost, and we’re very happy with the outcome.”
The Division 3 state finals will be held at Shining Rock Golf Club in Northbridge on Tuesday, and the Spartans are going in with plenty of confidence.
“We feel pretty good right now,” said Fiste. “Everyone has been playing well lately so we’re going to be going in with a ton of confidence, and I think we have the talent to get it done next week.”
In the Division 1 North tournament at The Meadow at Peabody, the St. John’s Prep Eagles qualified first for the state finals with a team score of 311. Mark Turner and Griffin Chenard each shot a 76 to pace the Eagles, while Chris Francoeur shot a 78 and Cole English shot an 81. Trent Han also shot an 81 and Will Grady shot an 82.
The Eagles will head to the Division 1 state finals at William Devine Golf Course in Dorchester on Monday.
Other individuals who posted scores in the Division 1 North tournament were Travis Ryan of Lynn Classical (92) and Christopher Cole of Lynn English (92).
