Not many close games have gone in the favor of the Saugus softball team so far this season, but on Wednesday, the Sachems held it together for a 7-5 victory over Revere.
Brooke Westmoreland (2-for-4, three RBI) was at the forefront of the win in more ways than one, with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh providing her with the necessary insurance to polish off a complete game performance in the circle.
“It’s a nice feeling, finally coming out on top in a tight game,” said coach Steve Almquist. “That’s a big win over a very good hitting team. I’m hoping this will give us a shot in the arm moving forward. It’s not going to get any easier for us.”
Saugus (4-3) received strong offensive contributions from the likes of Caity Sheehan (2-for-4) and Pauline Ascolese (2-for-3) who had a RBI apiece, the former on a fifth-inning double and the latter on a sacrifice fly in the third. Shannon Gayron finished the day 2-for-3.
Ally Hinojosa (3-for-4, 3 runs, RBI) and Juliana Cecere (2-for-4, 2 RBI) led the way offensively for the Patriots (6-2) who were done in by defensive miscues, resulting in five unearned runs.
“Our offense has the ability to keep us in any game but we’ll need to tighten up defensively,” said coach Joe Ciccarello.

The Rams (6-2) were led by Meghan Leavitt on offense, who went 4-for-5 with three RBI. Rebecca Walker and Kaitlin Marcinko each went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Johanna Calder got the win on the mound, pitching five innings in relief and giving up four runs on six hits.

Charlotte Plakans earned her first varsity win pn the mound, yielding just three hits while striking out seven along the way.
The Magicians (7-1) homered three times on the day; two off the bat of Sara Bornstein (2-for-3) and one from Alison Kapoll.
For the host Tanners (5-4), Amanda Crawford hit a solo home run in support of Tianna Dawe, who pitched a strong game, striking out seven and walking one.

A three-run sixth inning sent the visiting Crusaders (3-4), who were held to just three hits in total, on their way to the unlikeliest of victories.
Lucianna Mastromatteo’s two-run single tied the score at 2-2 before Alexcea Glynos (1-for-3) drew a two-out, bases loaded, walk. The former then finished off the win in the circle where she took over for Natalie Medros (0 runs, 3 hits, 6 strikeouts). Lexi McNeil added a hit in the win.
