In what was a fight to the finish, the Lynn Classical softball team fell short against Danvers on Wednesday at Breed Field.
With the score tied 2-2 entering the final frame, Hannah Llewellyn delivered a go-ahead single, scoring Dessa Daras who led off with a base hit. The former would come across with an insurance run on a fielder’s’ choice groundout, off the bat of Lizzie Prentiss.
“We battled back, scoring a run in the fifth and sixth innings to bring it to a two run deficit, but we couldn’t get the big hits when we needed them,” said Rams coach Erica Richard, whose team falls to 3-2 with the loss.
Alaina Gridley had a strong offensive day for Classical, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk, while teammate Megan Levitt went 2-for-4. Taylah Piazza knotted the score with a bloop single.
The Falcons (3-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after five complete on the strength of RBI singles from Daria Papamechail and Madison Mucci.
Swampscott 5, Saugus 4
Brooke Westmoreland (7 innings, 7 hits, 6 strikeouts) was the tough luck loser in the circle for the Sachems who dropped to 2-3 in a loss to the visiting Big Blue.
Caity Sheehan finished 2-for-3 with two RBI for Saugus who featured a sacrifice fly RBI from Victoria Benoit and two doubles from Westmoreland (2-for-2) who added a RBI as well.
Fenwick 5, Nantucket 1
Fenwick 14, Winthrop 2 / 5 innings
In their fourth annual trip to Nantucket, the Crusaders picked up their first two wins of the year.
In a victory over the host Whalers, sophomore Natalie Medros went the distance in the circle, yielding just three hits and an unearned run while striking out five. The winning pitcher also had a strong game with the bat, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In a shortened win over the Vikings, Fenwick’s bats stole the show, led by strong performances from juniors Julia Fusco (2-for-3) and Mikayla Porcaro (3-for-4) who finished with three RBI along with sophomore Lucianna Mastromatteo (2-for-3).
Freshman Alexcea Glynos earned the win with five innings of two-hit ball and three strikeouts.
Beverly 6, Peabody 2
The Tanners played strong defense and got solid pitching from Mallory LeBlanc, but the bats were quiet yet again for Peabody. The Tanners managed four hits against Beverly starter Rona Scott, with Tianna Dawe driving in Michaela Iannalfo for Peabody’s first run in the fifth inning. Another unearned run would be all the Tanners (2-3) could manage.
Beverly senior captain Caitlyn Munzing collected three hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Marlee Hamor went 2-for-4 with a RBI double.
