St. Mary’s Brady Ryan helped lift the Spartans to a win over Austin Prep on Monday, winning first singles, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6).

In a continuation of a match that began all the way back on May 5, the St. Mary’s boys tennis team notched two singles wins to get the win, 3-2, over Austin Prep on Monday afternoon. The Spartans fell behind, 2-1, back on May 5, dropping both doubles matches and getting a win from Conor Foley in third singles, 6-4, 7-5.
On Monday, it was up to the top two singles players to bring St. Mary’s back. They did just that, with Brady Ryan grabbing the win in first singles, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), and Matt McManus winning second singles, 6-4, 6-3.
With the come-from-behind victory, the Spartans (15-4) clinch a share of the Catholic Central League title with Austin Prep. This is the second straight year the Spartans have held at least a share of the CCL title.
St. Mary’s will finish up the season this afternoon when they travel to Boston to take on BC High.
Gloucester 4, Swampscott 1
The Big Blue (8-6) ended their season with a tough loss at home. Matt Jacobs had the only win for Swampscott in first singles, 6-0, 6-0.
BASEBALL
Peabody 9, Revere 5
The Tanners qualified for the tournament for the 23rd straight year with a come-from-behind victory.
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the third, Peabody got a rally started, with Chris Gillen knocking home a run with a single. Nick Palma, who had reached on a single, came home on Ben Irvine’s sacrifice fly to close the gap to 4-2.
The Tanners put the game away in the fourth, sending 11 batters to the plate. Jake Gustin hit a bases-loaded single, scoring two runs. Vinnie Orlando smacked a two-run double to give Peabody a 6-4 lead. Irvine tacked on a run with a RBI single, and Eric DeMayo drove in some more insurance runs with a two-run double.
Peabody starter Vasili Stefanopoulos scattered six hits and allowed five runs, though only three were earned. Will Diezmann tossed two scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits.
Everett 6, Winthrop 0
The Vikings were shut out at home. Winthrop wraps up its regular season against Gloucester on Wednesday.
Wakefield 5, Beverly 1
The Panthers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but couldn’t hold off Wakefield, which scored their five runs over the course of the fourth and fifth innings.
