The Swampscott boys soccer team closed out its season with a solid 3-1 win over rival Marblehead on Monday afternoon at home on Senior Day.
“It was a great day all around,” said Swampscott coach Al Eaton. “We had a big crowd, it was high energy and both teams played really well. Marblehead’s a heck of a team, and it was great to be challenged like that so early heading into the tournament.”
Michael Coffey scored two goals to lead the way for the Big Blue (14-3-1), while Jack Herlihy added the third goal.
With the regular season over, Swampscott is now sitting in wait for the tournament seedings to be released.
“I like the way we’ve been playing lately,” said Eaton. “We’ve been playing with a ton of energy and the guys have been executing when they need to. We hope to continue that right into the tournament.”
BOYS SOCCER
Peabody 2, Revere 2
The Tanners fought back from a 2-0 deficit to notch a tie with a strong Revere team at home on Monday to close out the regular season.
Johnny Alves scored both goals for Peabody in the draw.
After winning eight of their last 10 games, the Tanners (9-7-2) are into the tournament and ready to make some noise.
“We’re playing well right now and we have a lot of momentum,” said Peabody coach Stan McKeen. “Hopefully we can keep it going when the tournament rolls around.”
GIRLS SOCCER
Bishop Fenwick 2, Chelmsford 0
Needing a tie to qualify for the state tournament, the Crusaders did one better by notching a shutout win at home in the final game of the season.
Ally Charette and Grace Foley each scored a goal for Fenwick (8-7-3).
“We’re feeling really good going into the tournament, so we just want to keep it going,” said Fenwick coach Karen Guillemette.
Peabody 8, Revere 0
The Tanners closed out the regular season with yet another Northeastern Conference win, giving them an undefeated 13-0-3 conference record and a 14-1-3 record overall.
Jillian Arigo was the top scorer for Peabody with two goals and two assists, while Emily Nelson had two goals and one assist and Marissa Orlando had two goals. Kirsten Bradley notched one goal and one assist and Ali Demeo had one goal, while Alyssa Shashaty and Chloe Gizzi each had one assist.
GOLF
Division 1 state tournament
St. John’s Prep – 2nd place (289)
It all came down to a single score for the Eagles at William J. Divine Golf Club for the Division 1 state tournament, and the Prep came up just two strokes short. In a format where the top four scores for each team are counted, the Eagles tied with Xaverian with a score of 289. The tiebreaker came down to the score of the fifth golfer for each team, and it was Xaverian’s Michael Connors (79) who beat out Cole English (81) by two strokes to give Xaverian the title.
Chris Francoeur was the top finisher for St. John’s, shooting a score of 71. Mark Turner shot a 73, Griffin Chenard shot a 75, Trent Han shot a 79 and Will Grady shot an 81.
VOLLEYBALL
Peabody 3, Revere 1
After dropping the first set on the road in Revere, the Tanners (15-4) rattled off three straight set wins to take the match 24-26, 25-12, 27-25, 25-19.
Nene Onwuogu had 11 kills and two blocks on the night, while Melissa Gray had 10 kills and three aces and Hannah Kemp had 22 assists and three aces. Serena Laro contributed nine kills.
Marblehead 3, Swampscott 0
The Magicians swept Swampscott in straight sets on Monday, 25-15, 25-15, 25-16. With the win, Marblehead closes out the regular season with a 14-4 record.
Jenny Norcross led the way on offense with 12 kills, while Eve Rice added six kills. Reilly O’Grady also had a big day with 24 assists.
Central Catholic 3, Bishop Fenwick 2
Despite a tough loss for Fenwick (25-19, 18-25, 20-25, 25-19, 13-15), the Crusaders were still able to win the Catholic Central League with a record of 16-5. It is the fifth CCL title in the last seven years for Fenwick.
Sam Mancinelli had a massive game with 41 assists and seven digs, while Molly Camelo had 20 kills and eight blocks. Steph Bona had a balanced game with 14 kills and 15 digs, Julia Fusco had 21 digs and Mary O’Brien contributed 10 kills.
