The Swampscott girls lacrosse team kicked off tournament season with a decisive 16-1 win over Essex Tech in the Division 2 North First Round.
Ocean Crawley-Sweeney led the way with six goals for the Big Blue. Ellie Wright added four goals, Emma Sutherland chipped in with two, and Mary Miles, Grace DiGrande and Emmerson Laundry each scored once.
Swampscott will await the winner of No. 2 Marblehead and No. 15 Melrose, which is being played Wednesday, to see who it’ll play in the quarterfinal.
BASEBALL
Swampscott 6, Gloucester 3
The Big Blue’s Luke Marshall tossed a complete game Saturday, allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out four. At the plate, Matt Legere went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and two RBI, David Peterson went 1-for-2 with a walk, A.J. Venuti went 1-for-3 and Sean Lahrizi went 1-for-3 with a walk and stolen base.
St. John’s Prep 4, St. John’s Shrewsbury 1
St. John’s Prep 8, Marblehead 2
Saturday, the second-ranked Eagles came up a big win against the state’s top-ranked team, with four pitchers combining to hold the Pioneers to one (unearned) run. Tyler MacGregor drove in two runs.
The Prep was back at it again Sunday, topping Marblehead in the Pete Frates Fundraiser game. Jacob Bolger and Dan Frey each had three hits and three pitchers combined to hold off the Magicians. The Eagles ended the regular season at 16-5.
The Eagles will now move onto the Super 8 tournament. St. John’s Prep, which has made it to the Div. 1A final in each of the last two years, only to fall to Braintree twice, was a unanimous selection for the tournament.
SOFTBALL
Saugus 7, Stoneham 5
The Sachems won their third straight to finish out the regular season at 11-9. Caitlyn Wood got the win in the circle, allowing 10 hits and fanning eight.
Nystasia Rowe went 3-for-5 with two doubles, one of which came in the top of the ninth, bringing in two runs and putting Saugus on top. Katie Italiano also went 3-for-5, Alex Almquist went 2-for-4, Catie Sheehan went 2-for-5, Emma Howard went 2-for-5 and Sadie DiCenso drove in a run.
GIRLS TENNIS
Swampscott 4, Beverly 1
Saturday, the Big Blue (9-6) ended its regular season on a high note, topping the Panthers on the road. Lily Sanphy battled for a win at second singles, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. Kseniya Yermakova won at third singles, winning the final two sets 6-4, 6-4 after dropping the first, 2-6. The team of Cate McDonough and Rachel Weiss won 7-5, 5-2 at first doubles, and Olivia Fulghum and Molly Frauenholtz won at second doubles, 6-3, 7-5.
BOYS TENNIS
Swampscott 3, Beverly 2
After starting the season 0-2, the Big Blue rattled off 12 straight wins to end the regular season at 12-2. Will Talebian won at second singles, 6-2, 6-2, and the teams of Owen Madigan-Fried and Steve Santanello (3-6, 6-2, 6-4) won at first doubles and the team of Dan Johnson and Justin Ratner (6-4, 1-6, 6-4) won at second doubles.
