St. Mary’s was well-represented at the Catholic Central League golf championship Friday at Gannon Golf Course in Lynn. While Arlington Catholic’s John Cammrano finished first with a 73 on the par-70 course, Spartan brothers Benny Emmerich (74) and Kitchy Emmerich (76) finished second and third, respectively.
St. Mary’s Andrew Kreamer finished eighth with a score of 79, and Fenwick’s Rob Murphy finished 11th, also with a score of 79.
Tech 1, St. Clement 1
Carolyn Pojoy scored her first goal of the season in the 28th minute on an assist from Priscilla Imul as the Lynn Tech girls soccer team tied St. Clement, 1-1 Friday.
St. Clement found the net for the equalizer in the second half.
“It was a really good game,” Tech coach Bruce Diver said. “We used a lot of underclassmen and they really stepped up.”
Coral Gonzalez was a star in net for Tech, per usual.
“She (Gonzalez) saved a lot of girls and she inspired the underclassmen to work hard which is really nice to see,” Diver said. “They’re starting to get what they need to do and they’re really coming together.”
Tech is back in action today when the Tigers host Nashoba at Manning Field.
“Nashoba’s a really good team but I’m hoping to see us step up a little bit more and use the communication that we used today,” Diver said. “A lot of the girls are starting to play more aggressively than they did earlier in the season.”

The latter part of the season has been a tough stretch for the Spartans, but St. Mary’s turned things around with a win on Friday. Mia Hatfield, a freshman, scored her first varsity goal in the 70th minute of the game, propelling St. Mary’s to a much needed victory.
“That was a big goal,” St. Mary’s coach Jim Foley said. “We’ve been struggling to score goals lately. It was a nice play and she got a nice shot. It’s good to know that we have some young kids that can score.”
Emily Stephenson earned the shutout in net for the Spartans.
“We need two more wins in the next three games to qualify for the tournament,” Foley said. “We’re hoping this win will carry us into the tournament, but we’ll take it one game at a time.” The Spartans host Mystic Valley at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Saugus 5, English 0
Grace Gately, Emma Trahant and Alexa Zayas turned in solid performances for the Bulldogs, but it wasn’t enough to get the win as Saugus carried a 2-0 lead into the second half and added three more scores to nail the win. English is back in action at Danvers on Monday.
BOYS SOCCER
St. Mary’s 0, Greater Lowell 0
Richard Mateo turned in a strong performance in net with eight saves but the Spartans couldn’t get it going on the offensive side of the ball.
“We were kind of flat after two great games and the weather certainly didn’t help us,” St. Mary’s coach Mike D’Agostino said. “Defensively we played very well.”
Leading those efforts on defense for the Spartans was the trio of Christian Couillard, Jose Del Valle and Ryan Ramsey.
“I thought the three of them played phenomenal today on the field,” D’Agostino said. “The defense played solid but the offense just wasn’t clicking for us.”
The Spartans will have a few days to rest up before they take on Malden Catholic on Tuesday night at Manning Field.
Lynnfield 1, Newburyport 0
Pat Passatempo’s goal midway through the second half was enough to carry the Pioneers (10-5-2) to victory.
“It was a huge play,” Lynnfield coach Brett Munroe said. “We didn’t have too many chances and that was our best one. He took a great shot and we managed to hang on.”
Jack Campbell and Colin Fabri combined for the shutout in net. Up next for Lynnfield is a home game against North Reading on Tuesday.
FIELD HOCKEY
Marblehead 1, Saugus 1
The Sachems secured a spot in the tournament with a tie against a tough Magicians squad.
Caroline Driscoll gave the Magicians (11-1-3) an early 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game, but Saugus answered with a goal in the final two minutes of the contest to draw a 1-1 tie. Driscoll’s goal came on an assist from Bella Barbera. Although the Magicians outshot the Sachems 25-4, the end result didn’t fall in Marblehead’s favor.
“They were disappointed,” Marblehead coach Linda Rice Collins said. “They lost focus but it’s a good learning experience going into the state tournament. They realized that they need to stay focused for 100 percent of the game.”
Marblehead will look to get back on the win column when the team hosts Gloucester on Monday.
“It’ll be back back on turf, so I’m hoping we play the game we can play,” Collins said of the upcoming game. “I’m hoping they stay focused and execute the gameplan.”
Danvers 3, Swampscott 2
Olivia Fillenworth scored both goals for the Big Blue (6-3-6). Also performing well for Swampscott were Michaela Fredo and Mary Miles.
“We played very well,” Swampscott coach Jamie Spano said. “We had a lot of opportunities but we just couldn’t capitalize on them. Danvers is very aggressive.”
The Big Blue will look to bounce back on Tuesday, when the team visits Saugus.0
“We have to play together,” Spano said, “especially going into the state tournament.”
VOLLEYBALL
Marblehead 3, Masconomet 2
