Just like the boys team, the St. Mary’s girls soccer team came away with a nail-biting 1-0 victory over rival Austin Prep Wednesday.
Freshman Kayla Demers scored with five minutes remaining on a great pass from Gaby Diaz-Martinez to give the Spartans (6-1, 2-1 CCL) a shutout win on the road.
“It was a great overall team effort from everyone today,” said St. Mary’s coach Jim Foley. “We were getting outplayed to start, but after we made some changes the girls really got things going.”
And, as always, goalie Emily Stephenson was a brick wall in goal, notching 12 saves for the shutout.
“She’s one of the main reasons why our team has so much confidence,” Foley said of Stephenson. “She’s a rock back there.”
St. Mary’s has a few days off before getting back in gear on Wednesday with a home match against Cardinal Spellman.
Lynnfield 1, North Reading 0
Grace Sperling scored to lone goal of the game in the 47th minute on an assist from Liz Reed to notch a win in a Cape Ann League game on Wednesday. With the win, the Pioneers bounce back from consecutive losses and move back to .500 at 3-3 overall, with a 3-2 conference record.
Lynnfield will try to continue its forward momentum tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Rockport.
BOYS SOCCER
St. John’s Prep 4, Xaverian 0
The Eagles remained undefeated in the Catholic Conference with their third league win on Wednesday, improving to 4-1 overall. Sophomore Sam Smith led the way with a goal and an assist, while juniors Brian Brennan, Mitch Collins and Andrew Dembowski each added a goal. Goalkeepers Jack Morrison and Cam Buckley combined for the shutout in net.
St. John’s will be back in action on Saturday morning when they go on the road to play BC High.
GOLF
Salem 52, Malden 20
The Witches moved to 3-3 with a solid win at Olde Salem Greens on Wednesday afternoon. Nick Angeramo won his match, 6 1/2-2 1/2, Tommy Harrington won his match, 5 1/2-3 1/2, Wes Schaejbe won his match, 7-2, Ryan Farley won his match, 6 1/2-2 1/2, and Tim Farley won his match, 6-3. Cam Twomey won his match, 6 1/2-2 1/2, John Bellou won his match, 7 1/2-1 1/2, and Clayton Duffin won his match, 6 1/2-2 1/2.
Salem will host Everett at Olde Salem Greens on Friday afternoon.
FIELD HOCKEY
Marblehead 4, Everett 0
Hadley Carlton scored two goals to pace the Magicians, who remain undefeated at 7-0. Annie Ronan and Caroline Driscoll each scored a goal for Marblehead.
Marblehead coach Linda Rice Collins said she was happy with the way her team has started the year.
“They’re really playing well as a team right now,” said said. “They’re all connecting and performing at a very high level so far.”
Marblehead will host Saugus on Friday afternoon.
Swampscott 2, Beverly 2
The Big Blue (1-0-4) got goals from Sydney Cresta and Olivia Fillensworth. Swampscott will play a home game against Danvers tomorrow afternoon.
Central Catholic 3, Bishop Fenwick 0
Despite the loss for Fenwick (2-4-1), goalie Taylor Farrin had a huge game with 19 saves. Defender Caitlyn Dwyer also played a great game, according to Fenwick coach Marybeth Mahoney.
The Crusaders will try to rebound tomorrow afternoon on the road in Everett.
VOLLEYBALL
Peabody 3, Revere 1
In a tightly contested match, the Tanners took it in four sets, 26-24, 25-17, 24-26, 25-11. Rachel Coleman had a big day on the back end with 12 service points and four aces for Peabody. Melissa Gray and Serena Laro had eight kills each, while Hannah Kemp recorded an impressive 23 assists with three kills.
Peabody (3-1) is back in action tomorrow afternoon on the road in Swampscott.
Northeast Tech 3, Lynn Tech 0
The Tigers fell to 0-6 after falling in straight sets, 9-25, 15-25, 22-25. Libero Julia Boulay played well for Tech, as did Danilsa Espinal. Tech will play against Whittier Tech on Monday afternoon.
Marblehead 3, Milton 1
It took four sets, but the Magicians (6-0) won a battle against Milton on the road, 17-25, 28-26, 25-17, 25-14.
Jenny Norcorss led the team with 24 kills, Clara Pollard added eight kills and Eve Rice had 10 kills and three blocks. Mandy Dumais was a force in the back row and finished the night with 15 digs and two aces.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Shawsheen 23, Lynn Tech 36
The Tigers ran well in a makeup meet at Breakheart in Wakefield. Brandon Mendez finished second (18 minutes even) and Edgar Ortega placed third (18:08). Rodrigo Mora (eighth, 19:10), Jose Moral (10th) and Jayden Lowe (11th) also did well for Tech.
Manchester-Essex 17, Lynnfield 38
Hamilton-Wenham 15, Lynnfield 48
The Pioneers dropped to 0-5 after getting swept in a tri-meet on Wednesday. Ryan Iapicca was the highest finisher for the Pioneers, finishing in ninth place with a time of 17:47.
Lynnfield will run again on Wednesday at home against Amesbury.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Shawsheen 15, Lynn Tech 49
Patti Arroyo (10th place) and Yulianny Frias (11th place) ran well for the Tigers.
Manchester-Essex 15, Lynnfield 43
Hamilton-Wenham 15, Lynnfield 50
Annie Olson was the top finisher for the Pioneers on the 2.8-mile long course, placing 13th with a time of 22:00. Teammate Christine Irrera was not far behind, finishing in 16th place with a time of 22:41.
