The Spartans notched their 12th win of the season Thursday night at Arlington Catholic with a 60-57 win in double overtime over the Cougars. Sophomore guard Marnelle Garraud poured in 38 points to lead all St. Mary’s (12-2) scorers, and also swiped 13 steals. Fellow sophomore guard Mia Nowicki added 11 points and seven assists for the Spartans, while senior guard and teammate Kayla Carter contributed 11 rebounds, eight steals and seven assists.
SWIMMING
Lynn Classical 98, Swampscott 79
Kevin Chasse and Craig Mordaunt were double-winners for the Rams on Thursday night. Chasse won both the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 butterfly, while Mordaunt won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. Eli Bakas won the 200 freestyle, Carly Mendonca won the 100 backstroke, Cameron Marcinko won the 100 breaststroke and Sarah Sirois took first place in diving for Classical.
The Rams also won the three relay events. The 200 freestyle relay team of Chasse, Mordaunt, Alex Pedro and Eric Macorri took first place and qualified for the state tournament in the process. The 200 medley relay was won by the team of Chasse, Mordaunt, Simon Kazimierczyk and Mehdi Bakhouch, while the 400 freestyle relay was won by the team of Bakhouch, Mendonca, Harrison Seitz and Joshua Paige.
With the win, Classical finishes the regular season with a 7-2 record.
“It was a terrific meet on both sides tonight,” said Classical coach Denise Silva.
Lynn English 98, Revere 69
Senior captain Matt Bruno was a double-winner for the Bulldogs (5-4), winning both the 100 butterfly (1 minute, .88 seconds) and the 100 breaststroke (1:15.58). Caroline Zuffante also won two events, the 200 freestyle (2:37.12) and the 500 freestyle (6:00.81). Brandon Musaku won the 100 backstroke (58.59 seconds) and Shanel Turransky took first place in diving (164.77 points).
English also swept the three relay events. The team of Bruno, Uajda Musaku, Brandon Musaku and Peter Phelan won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:57.91, the team of Turransky, Uajda Musaku, Emma Trahant and Kylie Moorehouse won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:58.64 and the team of Bruno, Zuffante, Phelan and Brandon Musaku won the 400 freestyle relay.
“This was a fantastic meet,” said English coach Lisa Trahant. “There was a lot of enthusiasm from both teams, followed by personal-best times.”
Danvers 55, Peabody 41
The Danvers Falcons closed up the regular season with a 7-2 record after a win over Peabody. Roie Shemesh and William Norris finished in first and second place, respectively, in the 200 freestyle, while Lukas Narkevicius and Brendan Powers finished first and second, respectively, in the 50 freestyle. Jared Casey got a win in the 100 freestyle, Tim Unczur finished first in the 100 breaststroke and Cambria Cloutier finished first in the 100 backstroke. Ally Zunick and Emily Roach finished second and third, respectively, in the 500 freestyle.
Earning first-place finishes for the Tanners were Conor McCarthy in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, Nicole O’Neill in the 500 free and Paige Hayward in diving. The Tanners also had some new personal bests, with Alyssa Bettencourt (100 freestyle), Nicole Carredano (50 freestyle), Micaiah Jones (100 freestyle), Andrea Pappacostas (100 butterfly) and Tom Zalewski (100 breaststroke) coming up with career-best times.
