The St. Mary’s girls tennis team logged its first win of the 2017 season and the first under new coach Lauren Turenne, topping Pope John, 3-2.
St. Mary’s Mia Nikolakopoulos battled at first singles, beating Kim Nguyen, 8-6. Katia DiCostanzo topped Kim Huss, 1-0, after Huss left with an injury. The second doubles team of Caitlin Foley and Maddy Desmond topped Pope John’s Minh Phan and Alice Nguyen, 8-4.
Haleigh King fell to Pope John’s Sarita Chen, 1-8, and the team of Kayla Magwood and Taylor Hogan lost a tight match to Christen Santiago and Hannah Nguyen, 9-7.
“I am proud of the girls and how hard they worked today,” coach Turenne said. “Mia played in a great singles match, staying consistent. Caitlin and Maddy did a wonderful job working together as a doubles team.”
BOYS TENNIS
Fenwick 4, St. Mary’s 1
The Crusaders notched two singles wins and a doubles win to take their match against St. Mary’s, 4-1, on Tuesday. Alex Mizioch got the win in second singles, 6-1, 6-0, and Sean Loescher took third singles, 6-1, 6-0. The doubles match was won by the team of Vincent Ciampa and Pat McShea, 6-2, 6-0, and the second doubles match was given to Fenwick due to forfeit.
The lone win for St. Mary’s came from Brady Ryan, who got the win in first singles, 6-0, 6-0.
St. John’s Prep 5, Austin Prep 0
The Eagles got singles wins from Nick Salacci in first singles, 6-2, 6-1, Jacob Salacci in second singles, 6-1, 6-1, and Mikey Prokopis in third singles, 6-2, 6-0. In doubles play, the team of David Cunningham and Amal Raisingani won its match, 6-1, 6-1, and the team of Jack Malowepszy and Jason Xu won its match, 6-0, 6-1.
St. John’s (8-2) has a tough matchup coming up next, taking on undefeated Andover at home this afternoon.
Marblehead 5, Gloucester 0
Marblehead fought hard and came out with a clean sweep on Tuesday. Justin Faia got the win in first singles, 6-3, 6-4, Billy Ackerman took second singles, 6-1, 6-1, and Mike Conlin notched a win in his singles debut, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. In doubles play, the team of Sam Orenstein and Garrett Tully had to battle through three sets to get a win, 3-6, 6-4, 10-4, and the team of Dan Livtak and Jack Quigley didn’t drop a game in its 6-0, 6-0 win.
BOYS TRACK
Tech 82, Greater Lawrence 45
The Tigers (7-1-1) won this one with great performances in the sprints and field events. In the 100-meter, the Tigers swept the top three spots, as Jamie James (11.1 seconds), Steffan Gravely (11.3) and Akeem Blake (11.5) all qualified for the state meet. James also won and made states in the 200 (23.4), with Gravely finishing second (24.0)
Tech also swept the shot put (Brandon Lewis, Jason Loeup and Josue Pena, respectively), the discus (James, Pena and Loeup) and the javelin (Lewis, Gravely and Soto).
Other winners included Edgar Ortega in the 2-miles (11:17.03) with Bryan Deleon finishing second (11:29), Blake in the high jump (5-10) with Brandon Tuoy second (5-8) and Elvin Gonzalez in the long jump (18-6).
GIRLS TRACK
Greater Lawrence 80, Tech 56
Makalay Handley won the shot put for Tech and was part of the winning 4×100 relay team with Michayla Lawrence, Shaneil Nelson and Franciny Lechtenberg. Other winners included Zenyvette Gonzales in the 400 hurdles, Jayden Thackson in the 100 hurdles, Lawrence in the 100 and Nelson in the javelin.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Swampscott 14, Medford 5
Emma Sutherland, Maggie DiGrande and Ellie Wright each scored three goals to pace the Big Blue offense on Tuesday. Grace DiGrande had two goals, while Emerson Laundry, Olivia Fillenworth and Ocean Crawley-Sweeney each had one goal. Goalkeeper Abby Bruhm had nine saves in the win.
Swampscott (7-1) will travel for a road game against Marblehead on Friday.
BOYS LACROSSE
Wayland 9, Marblehead 8
The Magicians went to overtime with the Warriors on the road, but couldn’t finish off the win. Manning Sears scored four times for Marblehead, Sam Paquette added two goals, and Sam Cioffi and Joe Cronin added a goal apiece.
GOLF
Saugus 5, Cohasset 4
Saugus 7, Brookline 2
The Sachems evened their record at 7-7 after taking both matches in a tri-match on Tuesday. Rachel May, Madison Slane and Jenna Moore each won both of their matches on the day, while Julia Azzari contributed one win for Saugus.
The Sachems will play in another tri-match on Tuesday when they take on Hingham and Braintree.
BASEBALL
Lynnfield 5, Triton 4
Nick Aslanian earned the win on the mound for Lynnfield, tossing six innings and giving up three earned runs. Fernando Gonzalez came in and got the save, and he also paced the Pioneers’ offense with a single, a double and three RBI.
St. Mary’s 10, Charlestown 0 (F/6)
Aedan Leydon got the win on the mound, tossing the first three innings. Leydon fanned two Charlestown batters and didn’t allow any hits. Josh Mateo, Tommy Cash and Colin Reddy each pitched an inning in relief.
Offensively, Lee Pacheco went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, a triple and two RBI. Kyle Ouellette went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Leydon helped his own cause with an RBI single. The Spartans scored in five out of the six innings in the win.
St. Mary’s improves to 9-3 and gets back on the win column after suffering a tough loss to Austin Prep on Sunday. “We needed to keep pace in the league on Sunday and we didn’t,” Spartans coach Derek Dana said. “It’s nice to get back on the winning side.”
The Spartans battle against Arlington Catholic on Wednesday. “I’m hoping the bats continue to wake up,” Dana said. “The competition level rises. We made the turn, we’re halfway through the season so it’s time to start playing some more consistent baseball.”
SOFTBALL
Lynn Tech 33, PMA 21
It was a marathon game in which both teams racked up scores more suited for a football game, but the Tigers came out on top Tuesday.
Shyla Jackson had one of the hardest jobs on the diamond, pitching all six innings. She struck out six and made some excellent defensive plays in the circle. She also went 3-for-7 with two walks and four runs.
Catcher Mehrin Hueston also stuck it out for the entire game, and went 6-for-7 with three runs scored, three stolen bases and six RBI. Third baseman Alondra Sanchez had two hits and scored all six times she reached base.
There will be no rest for the weary as Tech gets back at it this afternoon on the road at Nashoba Tech.
Winthrop 5, Beverly 1
Kaitlyn Carter contributed on both sides of the ball for Winthrop in the win, getting the win on the mound after six innings of three-hit ball with two strikeouts and also going 2-for-4 at the plate with a sacrifice bunt and a run scored. Jess Martin had two RBI for the Vikings, while Maddy Fainga’a went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Winthrop (4-7) continues its marathon week of games this afternoon with a home game against Peabody.
