The Peabody girls soccer team stayed hot Tuesday, winning a big Northeastern Conference matchup with Marblehead, 3-1.
Peabody (11-1-1, 10-0-1 NEC) went into the half with a 2-0 lead and added to it with a goal in the 42nd minute. Marblehead scored seven minutes later, but couldn’t get more than that.
Emily Nelson scored a goal and logged an assist, Jillian Arigo and Chloe Gizzi each scored a goal, and Katherine Scacchi notched an assist. Scacchi, Gizzi, Alyssa Shashaty and Ali Demeo also played well on defense. Goalie Rebecca Sabino logged four saves for the Tanners.
Swampscott 1, Danvers 0
The Big Blue rebounded from their first loss with a big victory at Danvers. Haley Bernhardt provided all the offense Swampscott would need midway through the first half off an assist from Sydney Clark.
Coach Ken Leeder said that Michela Agresti played very well, and Nikki Rosa was solid, making seven saves.
“Danvers is very good but we put a lot of pressure on them, especially in the second half,” Leeder said. “We also did a good job defensively, staying organized.”
Northeast Tech 1, Lynn Tech 0
The Tigers dropped to 2-8-2 with the loss, but got great performances from Astrid Alvarado, Melanie Barrios and Priscilla Imul. Tech will host Notre Dame Academy on Thursday afternoon at Manning Field.
Winthrop 3, Lynn English 2
The Bulldogs lost a 2-0 lead at home on Tuesday afternoon. English (1-9-3) got goals from senior captains Taylor Sullivan and Emma Trahant.
English will travel to Peabody to play the Tanners in a Northeastern Conference matchup on Thursday evening.
Salem 3, Lynn Classical 2
The Rams (4-8-1) got goals from Julia Jordan and Amanda Wilkins, with Wilkins scoring her first career varsity goal. Goalkeeper Carly Mendonca had a huge game in the loss, recording 20 saves.
Classical will take on Beverly at home this afternoon.
Beverly 2, Saugus 0
Sachems goalie Alana Aldred played a great game in net, coming up with 12 saves against a tough Beverly team. Defensively, coach Chris Coviello was happy with the play of Marisa McClellan, Olivia Taplia-Gately, Aryana Carney, Alivia Burke and Allison LeBlanc.
The Sachems (7-5) will have a tough test against Swampscott on Thursday.
BOYS SOCCER
Classical 3, Salem 0
The Rams improved to 5-7-1 after a shutout win at home. Josh Blas had a big day with a goal and an assist, while Pa Sowe and Tyler Way tallied one goal each. Nathaniel Mace-Rateau played a great game on the defensive end for Classical.
The Rams will travel to Beverly to take on the Panthers on Thursday afternoon.
English 2, Winthrop 0
The Bulldogs got goals from Ble Ley and Abedom Gebreyesus in the win. Defensively, Wilgens Volny and Jose Perez played well, and Billy Allen and Angel Castillo split the shutout in net. Willy Gomez also played well on defense.
Beverly 5, Saugus 1
Matt LeBlanc scored the lone goal for the Sachems (0-13) at Anna Parker Playground in Saugus.
Peabody 2, Marblehead 1
It was Nicolo Klinger who notched the game-winner for the Tanners (6-6-1) in the second half. Jake Martins also scored a goal.
Peabody will take on Malden at home on Friday afternoon.
St. John’s Prep 5, Andover 0
Lynn’s Bryan Nju-Ghong scored twice and Andrew Dembowski and Steven Yakita also added goals for the Eagles. Goalie Jack Sorenson made five saves in the win.
FIELD HOCKEY
Fenwick 2, Bedford 1
The Crusaders got goals from Fredi DeGuglielmo and Stefanie Libby as they improved to 5-9-1. Kerry Kircher played well at midfield and Caitlin Dwyer was strong defensively for Fenwick.
VOLLEYBALL
Fenwick 3, Williams 0
Fenwick won in straight sets, 25-12, 25-6 and 25-19. Senior captain Sam Mancinelli had a big game with 25 assists and 10 digs for the Crusaders. Steph Bona, Jennie Meagher, Molly Camelo and Joie Dillon combined for 28 kills in the victory. The Crusaders (14-2) take on Arlington Catholic Thursday.
GOLF
Salem 52, Lynn English 20
The Witches closed out their 2016 regular season with a convincing win over the Bulldogs at Olde Salem Greens. Tom Harrington, Wes Schaejbe, Cam Twomey, Ryan Farley, Tim Farley, Clayton Duffin and Troy Zipper all notched wins for Salem.
Gloucester 39 1/2, Classical 32 1/2
The Rams went to Gloucester looking for a win to get into the tournament, but dropped a close match to wrap up its season.
“We played hard all year,” Rams coach Jack Morrison said. “I’m a little disappointed we came up here and lost such a close match, but they did all I could expect of them.”
Travis Ryan tied at the top spot Brendan Lannon also tied. Jake Hickenbottom and Mike Tarasuik won their matches.
